Congratulations to all the runners in yesterdays BK Half Marathon – you all make us proud. Yo! NYC mayor says he wants to be president, but he got a rocky start with many protests in the streets from New Yorkers who think otherwise.

At this point if he’d promise us an end to endless wars abroad austerity here at home I’d vote for that 3-legged dog that’s always hunting for scraps behind the Bowl-a-rama.

The UAE is Building the World’s Biggest Solar Farms, yet the US is starting yet one more oil war in Venezuela? And what about these war drums toward Iran? Where have we seen this before?

So here’s our weekly interview with the street, this time featuring Bebar, Brolga, Chris RWK, Combo-CK, Derek Fordjour, Food Baby Soul, Grimm the Street Kat, Hispano Man, Kathryn Rose, Sickid, Trice, and Winston Tseng.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2015

“I would recommend you take a good look in the mirror & remember it was White Americans who put you in the presidency, not radical leftists,” tweeted David Duke yesterday as #charlottesville, #nazi, #defendcville, and #confederate all trended at the top across the social media platform.

As if Donald ever thinks about those people who marched. Ever.

People marched and bellowed with torches Friday night and with swastika flags on Saturday in Charlottesville; mostly white men and boys encouraged by the Trump/Pence team and all the people who are steering-advising. After a car was driven into the crowd of anti-racists the governor declared a state of emergency.

Racism and other -isms are not new. Neither is how they are being fueled and fanned today.

During these caustically hot summer days in the US almost every opinion expressed is characterized as political rhetoric, thanks to years of televised cable shouting matches. Reasoned discourse with gray areas is strictly verboten. But if you really want to know what is happening, just follow the money. Historians tell us that is the struggle, simplified and bare for the eye to see. Paid-for disinformation and millionaire newsreaders may cloud the view, but that’s what’s happening.

The majority of us are good, even fantastic, people who know somehow we are being ripped off and gradually shoved toward the door. The people have the actual power when they seize it. It just may take an economic collapse.

See any on the horizon?

Thankfully we still have Street Art, right?  There is no doubt that it has already become more political here in the last year and the odds are that it will probably grow louder – as our graffiti and Street Art is always a direct mirror of us.

So here’s our weekly interview with the streets, this week featuringArt Baby Girl, ASVP, Mad Villian, Brolga, Camo Lords, El Sol 25, Gutti Barrios, Raddington Falls, Monsieur Chat, Myth, Pay to Pray, Raemann, Self Master, Stray Ones, and You Go Girl!.

“Resistance is here to stay, welcome to your 100th day” – said people in Climate Marches across the country yesterday to President Exxon-Lockheed. God, has it only been 100 days? It feels like 1,000. Nevertheless, there are a lot of new politically themed pieces popping up on the street regularly, along with completely apolitical and humorous ones. Either way, we always dig the conversation on the street.

Here’s our weekly interview with the streets, this week featuring: Adam Fujita, Brolga, Carlos Colp, Jaune, Legend, Lost Hills, Lunge Box, Myth, Raf Urban, Taco, and Tatyana Fazlalizadeh.

“The government had a system where the rich man’s son went to college, and the poor man’s son went to war” Muhammad Ali opposing the draft and the Vietnam war. He took the slings and arrows, and stood his ground as very few do.

Ali inspired many portraits on the street and here is one recent mural from Street Artist Brolga.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2015

You did it! First week of 2016 DONE! Congratulations sis we still have a few blocks to go. Exciting new gallery shows already this weekend with Esteban Del Valle in LA and Dalek / Interezni Kazki in NYC and a home-baked hard nut trio of El Sol 25, Specter, and Russell Murphy “Putting It In” in Brooklyn this week. Actually the latter would like to further the dialogue with you about what is the current rightful state of illegal work among all the pretty murals going up now on the streets.

“Today the lines between legal and illegal works on the streets have been blurred by social media and the overcommercialization of the graffiti and street art aesthetic and although many of the artists working currently to create legal murals have helped the art form gain international recognition and acceptance, many of the artists strictly creating illegal works have not had opportunities to separate themselves from the growing roster of legal muralists,” says the press release.

Meanwhile this week the stock market was its worst since 2011, Obama readied his last State of the Union, El Chapo was thinking of vacationing north of the border, Hong Kong Street Art was asking people about 5 missing booksellers, the Lotto jackpot broke records and a Queen Victoria statue was “Vaj-ed” in Bristol.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Apples on Pictures, Billi Kid, Brolga, Felix Semper, Honschar, Hot Tea, Kai, Keith Haring, Kerry James Marshall, Lunge Box, Mgr Mors, Otto “Osch” Schade, Phoebe New York, Scoutpines, Specter, Thiago Goms, and War Buck$.

Keith Haring (1958-1990) painted these two murals on the same handball wall verso and reverso in a park on Harlem River Drive and E 128 Street in 1986. The murals were restored last year. Keith donated the art work to the city of New York. We heard his name mentioned in conversation as we were riding the subway and wanted to share these art works with you as a reminder of his art and his influence on today’s Street Art world.

Did you see the blue moon over New York Friday night? Looked to be more crimson actually. Welcome to August and the hot sticky band of dirty grit that comes with it. Escape from New York if you can, even if it is just on a lawn chair in a park. NYC parks have a lot of free movies this summer and a huge array of free concerts all through the remainder of dog days. Naturally there is great deal of artful expression on the streets available on your way to and from the venue, very dramatic in its own way.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring $howta, 52, Brolga, BustArt, Esteban Del Valle, Dain, Dasic, Don Rimx, Droid, JR, Julien de Casablanca, KFA, LMNOPI, London Kaye, Ron English, Rubin415, Sokar Uno, and Willow.

Yo sis the joint was rockin this week in the USA with public healthcare snatched from the jaws of defeat, Same Sex Marriage approved by the Supreme Court coast to coast, and Obama singing Amazing Grace at a heart-breaking memorial after the racist shootings in Charleston. Locally we were happy to work with Chip Thomas (Jetsonorama) to get into Brooklyn and put up his new powerful piece on Black empowerment commemorating the 50 year anniversary of the Selma marches, the huge 30 piece Coney Art Walls project officially opened Wednesday night, and Brooklyn’s Maya Hayuk is suing Starbucks for stealing her art to sell coffee.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Andreco, Barlo, Ben Eine, Biella, BR, Brolga, Crisp, Denton Burrows, Eva Mueller, Gaia, Kaws, Oji, Old Broads, Lungebox, Praxis, Pyramid Oracle, and UFO907.

Barlo made this mural on the island in Lamma, Hong Kong. It is meant to recall a simpler way of living that is now eclipsed by rapid modernization. “It talks about a traditional practice (using long sticks to propel your fishing boat) that the main city of Hong Kong seems to have lost. It is in these small islands and villages where you can still find elements of this lifestyle, ” says Barlo.

Andreco is back on BSA with this “Living Mural” a project he has had in his mind since 2010, he says. when “I was doing my PhD in environmental engineering on the environmental behavior of green technologies, green roofs and green walls in particular. At that time I decided to combine the Artistic with the Scientific research when doing a mural with an integrated vertical garden. The wall painting is ephemeral and it will change over the time with the plant growth,” Andreco tells us.

Part of the “Hydra Project” at the Cittadellarte-Pistoletto Foundation in Biella, Italy, Andreco used Natural paint, aluminum strings, climbers plants, soil, dry rocks wall, and an irrigation system for this piece.

Hillary Clinton was on Roosevelt Island yesterday formally announcing her candidacy under blue skies with an enthusiastic crowd speaking about income inequality and the poor and sounding more populist than ever. Let’s see if she can stretch the 2 Billion Dollars in donations she is reported to have raised all the way to next November. It all adds up quickly bro, and before you know it, you just blew a billion!

Wonder if she saw the Hot Tea pool while she was there on the island.

This weekend is the annual Welling Court community mural party in Queens. Don’t miss it. Run on almost no budget it features over a hundred muralists who always dig the friendly neighborhood vibe thanks to organizers Alison and Garrison Buxton.

And of course we are seeing a lot of new dope stuff on the streets…

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Brolga, Chris RWK, Dasic, Esteban Del Valle, James Bullough, Joe Iurato, Logan Hicks, Owen Dippie, Paper Skaters, QRST, Ramiro Davaro-Comas, Rubin415, SheWolf, Sonni, Tats Cru, Wing, and WK Interact.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2015

Today we celebrate Mother’s Day in the USA and Mexico and about 70 other countries. Cheers and thank you to all the mothers of the world.

If only we would stop paying lip service to the foundational importance of motherhood; if millions of mothers would know that tomorrow they will have food to feed their children, that they could live without fear of violence, could take off time from work to care for their families, were paid a living wage equal to a that of a man, could feel loved, protected, supported, respected and cherished.

Let’s all work to make sure that more mothers experience love and a peace of mind. Even if your mother is not alive and here with us today, we can support someone’s who is.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring $howta, Anthony Lister, Brolga, City Rabbit, Gualicho, Hot Tea, JR, M*Code, Mr. Volpe, Nina Kunan, No More Lies, Pablo Harymbat, Phoebe New York, Pyramid Oracle, Swil, Tristan Eaton, and Willow.

The phrase in Tristan’s new mural inspired by the Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five song from 1983, “New York, New York”.

New York, New York
Big City of Dreams
and every thing in New York
ain’t always what it seems.
