Julieta XLF & Bifido Emancipate “Le Baccanti” in Requena

The Street Art duo of Julieta XLF and Bifido continues to produce works that blend together their strongest individual talents with elements of photorealism and decorative painting organically combined. This time we are in Requena, Spain and looking at the reflection of a girl looking at herself as a free woman, say the artists. “Le Baccanti”, from the Greek tragedian of classical Athens named Euripides, features such a figure unaware perhaps of the possibility of her own emancipation.

Say the artists; “The wine, represented by some grape berries held in her hands, serves as chance of something else; the richness of the land and unconsciousness of one’s ability to achieve full awareness. The girl, split, looks at her previous self. She is a free woman, able to be whatever she is, without compromise. A woman as fierce as the surrounding landscape that she holds strongly, making herself part of it.”

Bifido & Julieta in Buñol Go to Church with “EGO”

Here is the third recent collaboration of Spanish Street Artists Bifido and Julieta, a combination that plays on the strengths of each individual while retaining their respective characters.

As the creative partnership continues you can begin to see a common language forming with the oddly surreal photography/painting collage work that Bifido does and the context of Julieta’s paintings that are often occupying an other-worldly sphere of existence. Curiously, they ground one another.

Here the storied overture is your associations with the spiritual life, a young girls imaginings of being something ethereal and able to take wings. The façade of this austere Spanish colonial architecture provides a series of sizes and angles to work within for a scene surely inspired by the buildings use as St. Rafael’s Church.

“Our new work is about the power of church and the influence that religion has on people,” Bifido tells us as they finish the mural here in Buñol, not far from Valencia. They have given the piece the title, “EGO”.

Halloween this year is on a Tuesday so its hard for people to know when exactly to celebrate it – we had 20 or so Trick-or-Treaters Saturday night so that tells you the kids vote in this part of Brooklyn.

Of course with the folks we have running the White House, every day feels like Halloween. “Here, I’ll trick you with this POPULIST costume, and my treat will be to take whats left of your middle class chocolate.”

Trick or Trick!

It doesn’t help that Tabloid TV loves the “Zombies on Parade” – they are like sugar addicts dancing for eyeballs and advertising dollars.

But from a Street Art and public performance perspective, New York is a thrill, a regular monster mash! The East Village parade 2017 on Tuesday will have puppets, 53 bands performing different types of music, dancers, artists, and thousands of New Yorkers in costume. Be safe out here ya’ll.

About the work:

“Disposing Machine” is the new mural from Nevercrew in Melano, Switzerland for Artrust. Their statement:

“Habits, attitudes, principles and awareness are conditioned by reality, and reality is conditioned by the perception everyone has of it. The position of humankind in its environment, in its World, is at the same
time part of its nature and a point of view from which to perceive it.

Systems are then interpretations, a way to give human shape to
something that’s not necessarily made for it, as well as a way to decide
which shapes to give and how to read them. As reality could be built and
altered by systems, so nature could then risk to be detached from
human sensing; an human reconstruction of something that exists
outside this given shape but that still is directly subjected to each action
that’s made on it.”

The Italian Street Artist Bifido and Spanish artists Juelieta completed this fantastical work in Lecce, Italy this week for the 167 Art Project. Bifido tells us that the title is “First Fire” and it “talks about the possibility to love each other in a fantastic way, and it focuses on the importance of play in our lives.”

We really dig these new collaged political cartoons that are on the street as quickly as the weeks news – each depicting one of the many rich white men who are impacting our minds and our bank accounts and our health and sense of security right now. Are we watching the White House or Good Fellas? The backstabbing, front stabbing, chicanery, and ongoing systemic tomfoolery makes you wonder who’s actually running things.

The news cycle is hourly it seems, with tweets and personnel changes and threats happening so fast that people are developing PTSD that is triggered by news alerts on the phone. We have to admire any Street Artist who tries to keep up with the developments and get their commentary on a wall.

Many young and old New Yorkers are wincing from high rent, high debts, crumbling infrastructure, and everyone is working longer hours, if they are lucky enough to work. Some just give up. Meanwhile the one plausible healthcare option that many have gained over the last handful of years? – the servants of the rich have been trying to stab it to death – but they couldn’t muster it this week. Even now – Trump says he’ll stand by and watch it die rather than improve it in any way. Have we ever had a leader who is so cynical?

Even Senator McCain – in our top image above – fresh off his tax-payer funded brain cancer surgery, waivered this week before providing the pivotal vote that saved healthcare for 20 million or so. Most GOP Senators ignored the majority of the US citizens who implored them to fix Obamacare not nix it. But their bank accounts proved far more important than our health. The rich and their corporations are flooding our entire political system and only after we get their money out would we be able to call the USA a democracy. Otherwise we are just fooling ourselves.

Bifido and a Secret Reading Place Under the Bridge

This new piece under a freeway bridge by Italian Street Artist Bifido may remind you of summer vacation and the chance to let your mind follow a fantastic story. Maybe “Mystery of the Golden Temple: Thailand,” or “Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter” or “Brown Girl Dreaming.“

The freshly wheatpasted piece that Bifido staged and shot also reminds us how important literacy is and how 2/3 of people worldwide who are illiterate are girls and women. Recent studies published in Science Daily last month indicate that adults reading out loud to their children makes a lasting impression on them and increases their abilities as they grow older.

A strong independent girl makes a strong independent woman and reading is crucial to this journey – wherever the journey leads. We just checked out a website called Smart Girls, begun by comedian Amy Poehler and producer Meredith Walker. It’s “dedicated to helping young people cultivate their authentic selves. We emphasize intelligence and imagination over ‘fitting in.’ ”

Hooray! Spring is here in New York again. That means daffodils and crocuses are sprouting up among the soda cans and candybar wrappers and cigarette butts in the park’s gardens, and new proud or furtive aerosol missives are being sprayed on crumbling walls and phone booths are getting hi-jacked with posters by artists and galleries are again overflowing onto sidewalks for openings.

Our thanks to everyone who came out for the Heliotrope fundraiser this Thursday, to Swoon for being Swoon, and to her for asking us to curate the new line of prints, and to the six artists who gave their best to us all and to the Heliotrope projects in Haiti specifically: Case Maclaim, Faith XLVII, Icy And Sot, Li-Hill, Miss Van, and Tavar Zawacki (Above). Thank you also to all of Swoon’s team for helping us mount the show.

Also saw the press preview of the new documentary about NYC Street Artist Richard Hambleton called “Shadowman” this week, which was thrilling, frightening, sickening, and beautiful. People in the room were all feeling a bit nauseous when the lights came up – but for various reasons; the commercial art world seems to suck the beauty out of things, artists can be finicky like cats, and the worship of drug culture is dreadfully overglamorized and it killed off lots of cool people and cancer (from smoking) is actively killing the artist right in front of your eyes, which he freely admits to. Also, his work is amazing.

Accurately capturing the ragged, wooly, wildly creative downtown scene in which Hambleton first came up, Director Oren Jacoby premieres “Shadowman” at The Tribeca Film Festival in NYC on April 21, 2017.

On a totally related note, we were sad to learn Friday afternoon of the death of Glenn O’Brien, influential part of the NYC “Downtown” art and cultural scene in the 1970s, 80s and much much more. We had last seen him doing an interview with Lee Quinones in Chinatown for Lee’s show two years ago.

This week we’ll be seeing you at Nuart Aberdeen! It’s Nuarts’ first foray into another city and really it’s just a stone’s throw across The North Sea to Stavanger, the original home of Nuart in Norway. The kids are on spring vacation in Aberdeen all week so we know we’ll see a lot of swag youth traipsing around to see new artworks going up by artists and thoughtful academic types attending conference lectures. Drunken types will be attending the Friday night fight at a local bar. BSA will be at Belmont theater presenting BSA Film Friday LIVE and introducing “Saving Banksy” and “Beautiful Losers” over the weekend. Come on over; can’t wait to meet you!

GarGar Festival in Small Town Penelles, Spain.

The influence of Street Art and graffiti continues to disperse through cities, towns and the countryside of many regions in the form of mural festivals. The village of Penelles in Catalonia asks residents if they would like to hand over the walls of their houses to be painted by contemporary artists and many say yes, gladly.

It is a far cry from the responses of landlords in large cities where the association in the minds of many is graffiti and vandalism. According to a posting on Facebook, the challenge for attendees of a recent mural festival here was to gather enough money to rent a bus and drive people around to see the new artworks!

GarGar, the festival held in the third week of May, also featured live music, food trucks, beer, workshops, and people milling around taking photos of the artists while they worked and discussing the new pieces. Perhaps taking as a model the same concept as the Spanish town of Fanzara, Penelles is a small sleepy town that is being revitalized with urban art.

Photographer Luis Olive Bulbena tells us that the town, which is located around 130 km northwest of Barcelona, has about 500 inhabitants and “basically the whole of the municipality revolves around agriculture.”

Bifido, Don Quixote and Sheep on Cell Phones at GarGar Festival

The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha by Cervantes inspired this new wheat-pasted scene by Italy’s Bifido at the Gar Gar Festival in Panelles, Spain. His new interpretation of a metaphor is drawn from the scene in chapter 8 where Don Quixote and his sidekick servant Sancho are riding their horses up the road and see two clouds ahead of them. Quixote’s wild imagination mistakes them for dual great armies on the edge of war with one another and he describes them aloud in detail based on the forms he sees in the dust.

Sancho warns him that those shapes that he sees are simply dust clouds from herds of sheep and not to be afraid. But of course the macho testosterone meathead Quixote cannot wait to go to war and gallops in swinging his big sword, later to discover he has slaughtered a number of sheep and that a couple of nearby Shepherds are angry at him. They throw stones at the buffoon and break a lot of his teeth. Rather than admit he was wrong he tells Sancho that they had actually been armies but sorcerers has transformed them into sheep. Right.

So that worked out really well.

Later, there is a very detailed vomiting scene. No kidding.

Here the sheep are played by people all around us right now, cradling their electronic devices in hands, sort of oblivious to the world around them. He says the kid with the sword is fighting “against the contemporary man who spend a lot of time with his smartphone like a sheep.”

Truly, by now, it is an army. But who does the kid represent in this case? We’re not sure.

Bifido: “Meanwhile” …on a London Train Platform

Hurry up and wait.

Much of modern life is like this. In cities especially where bottlenecks in tunnels, on bridges, on highways and streets can slowly… drive… you… crazy. We have long lines for dance clubs and drivers licenses, sample sales and Shake Shack, airport security and air-headed pop stars. And of course we wait for buses and trains. Time itself appears as a liquid commodity; pooling up and quickly slurping down a drain.

Italian photographic collage Street Artist Bifido is giving people who wait for the train on the Forest Gate platform in London something to contemplate that might make the wait entertaining, if not transcendent. Shooting his own photos of people and props in studio for perfect clarity, Bifido plays with proportion and relationships to create an Alice in Wonderland effect with otherwise normal looking images. Here’s a woman nearly falling into a huge cup of tea. There is a tree man is surrounded by swirling leaves that appear as butterflies in someone else’s stomach. A mammoth sized snail speaks to a small woman with an umbrella.

Bookended by clocks, this is the space you have between rushing.

Meanwhile, he calls it, and he is doing it as part of a vast urban regeneration program curated by Preznt Project on a MTR Crossrail commission.

Standing on the platform you can free your imagination for a moment and have some creative time, before the next train slides quickly into view.

Armory Week : The art fairs are happening in NYC and folks are finding new, original and purely derivative ideas from the commercial shows that swarm with fans and lookyloos. The few folks we spoke with say that sales have been average to slow with guests carefully considering before purchasing, with the occasional big splurger. It could be that the market has been in an unspoken soft period for the last year or so due to a weak economy or the tumultuous political landscape in this election year. Nonetheless, there is nothing like the hivelike high you can get swimming through rivers of art fans at a New York fair, periodically bumping into a peer or a tanned celebrity.

Meanwhile, we have some dope street stuff for you from Jersey City to Morocco to Italy and Switzerland. Here’s our our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Atomiko, Bifido, C215, Dmote, Bradley Theodore, Dylan Egon, El Anatsui, Fintan Magee, MSK, Obey, Otto “Osch” Schade, PK, Post, Rime, Sean9Lugo, Sharon Lee De La Cruz, Space Invader, and Toner.

It is very fitting then to have found this kitty in the wild in a city where hundreds of cats roam the streets without a particular home to go to. While not officially kept as pets the cats are being fed next to doorways. Many of them struggle for food and are visibly in need of some medical care but you will see very some happy felines comfortably bathing under the warm Moroccan sun.
