We’re counting down the last 12 days of 2012 with Street Art photos chosen by BSA readers. Each one was nominated because it has special meaning to a reader or is simply a great photograph from 2012 that they think is great. Our sincere thanks to everyone who shared their favorite images.

Our eighth entry comes from photographer Henrik Haven, a mural by Ericailcane. The photo was taken in Grottaglie, Italy during the FAME Festival 2012.

“What a journey this has been!,” says Henrik, “I had such a good time in Grottaglie at this years Fame Festival. Tasty food, good coffee, great people, lots of sunshine and last but not least, I saw and photographed a bunch of excellent public art pieces in the streets of the town. I spent many days walking around the whole town to find most of the pieces, just like a treasure hunt.”

Our seventh entry comes from photographer Robin Pope and it was nominated by Anne Trotman; a large image of a down-on-his-luck fella by Brooklyn collective Faile that says, “I Used to Be Worth Something.” The figure sits on a curb with his head in his hands and the New York skyline behind him, and it became one of the most photographed pieces this year – perhaps because the ever-more rough economy in New York has become so challenging and even frightening to average and poor New Yorkers.  Trotman says this image on Wythe Street, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn was taken “on one of the only days of snow in 2012.”

Apexer Photographed by Jim Prigoff

Apexer Photographed by Jim Prigoff

We’re counting down the last 12 days of 2012 with Street Art photos chosen by BSA readers. Each one was nominated because it has special meaning to a reader or is simply a great photograph from 2012 that they think is great. Our sincere thanks to everyone who shared their favorite images.

Our sixth entry comes from photographer, author, and lecturer James Prigoff, acclaimed for his extensive documenting of many aerosol art movements since he began shooting them worldwide in the 1960s. Not only do we dig his entry into our 12 Photos of ’12 because of it’s diverse, colorful, and celebratory nature, we’re honored because Jim doesn’t usually do this sort of thing.  “I have never sent a photo to any web site for publication and doubt that I will in the future. However, you fellows are doing such a diligent and excellent job in documenting the many forms of Graff and Street Art, that I decided to forward this very special piece of art,” he writes.

For his nomination, Prigoff chooses this 2012 piece by Apexer in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco.  Some photographers may dive in for a detail shot of this vibrant work, but Jim says, “I believe in photographing the art in context to its location, not just a detail that could be anywhere. “

Our sincere thanks to him and and we wish a very Merry Christmas to those who are celebrating it today.

“Apex has been painting meticulously drawn, very colorful 3-D Images for a number of years. An early one appeared in my co-authored book ‘Walls of Heritage – Walls of Pride – History of African American murals’. His approach was quite different from the very early work of Daim and Ernie. Each year the work has shown increased sophistication. This image is by far the most unusual of his work thus far. It was exciting to discover it, ” says Prigoff.

Our fifth entry comes from Joel Zimmer from NYC, who nominates this photo taken in Bushwick, Brooklyn in NYC. Many Street Art photographers these days like to experiment with their craft in addition to simply documenting someone elses, and we’re all in favor. Here Joel experiments and bends the planes of the wall to reach out to the viewer. Joel explains that this is a triple exposure of the ECB mural with an Over Under mural under it. He says he made the image “in camera” using a Yashica-A and Portra 400.

Won and Secr Photographed by Luna Park

We’re counting down the last 12 days of 2012 with Street Art photos chosen by BSA readers. Each one was nominated because it has special meaning to a reader or is simply a great photograph from 2012 that they think is great. Our sincere thanks to everyone who shared their favorite images.

Our fourth entry comes from the ever-present effervescent New York based photographer Luna Park. Luna offers this photo as one of her favorites from this year because it presents a departure from the standard fare that she regularly records and documents in the graffiti and Street Art scene: a hybrid. For a scene that can be  prideful of often taking a rebellious stance, there can be more stylistic rigidity and repetition than one might expect. In this photo captured in The Bronx, NYC, Luna sees artists who are daring to re-create and challenge the genre with a spirit of experimentation.

“This enormous, illegal track side piece by Won and Secr (both RA crew) in the Bronx blew me away because it was the first so-called ‘hybrid’ piece I ever saw in person,” explains Luna as she talks about her reaction to finding it.  “It isn’t very often that one witnesses innovation in graffiti, but this part-extinguisher/part-burner gets high marks for being original,” says Park.

We’re counting down the last 12 days of 2012 with Street Art photos chosen by BSA readers. Each one was nominated because it has special meaning to a reader or is simply a great photograph from 2012 that they think is great. Our sincere thanks to everyone who shared their favorite images.

Our third entry comes from Canadian photographer Andre Pace, who has shot 3,800 photos over the last 6 years, mostly cataloguing Montreal and Quebec based Street Art. Andre is a sincerely dedicated photographer to capture this much work since the scene is very dispersed and difficult to catch, “Please remember this is not NY or LA or London where street art is everywhere,” he tells you while describing the long trips he takes just to capture a few good shots.

Here Andre talks about his favorite photo of Street Art from 2012 -“This photo was taken in Sherbrooke, Quebec on a cold January morning in 2012. There is an old train yard in Sherbrooke and once a month I drive 100 miles to get there there from Montreal trying to catch a Labrona or an OTHER train piece. I know that these 2 great Montreal Street Artists will trek all the way over there just to do a piece on a train – it’s their favourite medium. On this day I felt very lucky and I finally got a shot of a very rare Labrona piece on a train,” Mr. Pace says.

Our second entry comes from solid graff photographer and NYC resident Sabeth 718, who climbs all over these streets and roofs and tracks and doorways looking for his best shots. The photo was taken in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and we can see why he likes it so much, with the sun setting over Manhattan and peering under the bridge for just a second. As quickly as the runner goes by, the light will change too. Glad he captured it and he shares it with BSA readers.

There’s No Place Like Swoon For The Holidays

There’s No Place Like Swoon For The Holidays

Going to Swoons studio in Brooklyn for a piece of blueberry pie and a cup of hot cider on a windy and rainy grey day is sort of like going home for the holidays. There are so many familiar faces here, printed and hand colored, like the ones you have seen in decaying doorways and on weathered walls around your city for years. Many have faded with time and the rays of the sun bleaching them opaque, the wind and rain battering and peeling them off in pieces. Here their faces are clear and their lined expressions, contoured hands, and personal stories are vibrant once again – here are your old friends in full regalia, happy to have you nearby to keep them company.

Swoon (photo © Jaime Rojo)

As you walk gently passed the 3 people on their knees pressing large sheets of translucent paper onto a freshly inked 6’x 8’ linotype carving and are careful to duck behind one drying piece hung from above to dry, you may strike up a conversation with a tall handsome woman named Tennesee with dangling earrings, or ask a round-faced lad about the tinfoil and craft paper boat he’s just made in Swoon’s ad hoc workshop – and learn the name of the Lego captain he’s made to guide the vessel.

The double height factory loft ceiling, peeling brick walls, flat files, buckets of tools, and long work tables piled with cookies and bagels feel like a welcoming place, and Swoon invites you to help with the lino printing or to pick up and inspect still-damp portions of a sculpture she’s made recently. If there was a fire place crackling under a limestone arch of a high-collared violinist suddenly pirouetted out from behind a pile  of reclaimed wood and began playing Christmas hymns, you wouldn’t be surprised. In this most sacred place, an artists’ studio, it feels like home.

JC Has Something On His Mind in Instanbul

As winter settles in, I’ve been thinking about getting a fur hat. Is that wrong? How about fake fur?  What about just hoisting a cat up on my head and balancing it there? They sleep all the time anyway so they might as well provide some service to mankind aside from hunting the occasional mouse.

Street Artist JC has been in Istanbul with his bud MuryzOne and they may have the same thing in mind. Here are couple of shots of new stuff they did while there.

New Labrona Shots in Miami

“It was an amazing trip!,” says Canadian Street Artist Labrona, who was in Miami for the Art Basel 2012 festivities this month. While there he collaborated on four walls. Two were with the Canadian art collective En Masse, who has been working with a monochromatic palette to allow a multitude of styles to co-exist in the same venue peacefully; drawing attention to the techniques and hand style of the various contributors while presenting unified mural.

“The other two walls were with my long time painting buddy Omen and new painting buddy name Five,” says Labrona. Here are a few shots highlighting his work.
