Making Faces In the Ruins with Robbbb in Beijing

Beijing is exploding with construction projects completed in head-spinning timelines and that can make you feel silly. Street Artist Robbbb shares exclusive pics of new works in the ruins that surround the rapid construction boom. He says he wants to draw a parallel between the attitude of the city right now and the excitement and exuberance of face-making youth.

“The rapid development of Beijing is making this ancient city appear and feel more and more young,” Robbbb says of the sort of cock-eyed optimism that comes with spurts of high-profile growth. “I pay attention to the city and at the same time also pay attention to young people,” he relates as he equates the childlike silliness that he sees in a more youthful city and how we like to act a fool. In all honesty, your grandma probably makes faces sometimes too, but we get the point.

“Through their exaggerated facial expressions,” Robbbb explains, “I’m expressing my thoughts on the city’s development and its reflection in life.”

A Calligraffiti Greeting from eL Seed

Guess we are a day late for this maybe since the EID celebrations were actually yesterday as Ramadan 2013 came to a close, but how often do you get to see an EID greeting created by a graffiti artist? Um, never.
So for all the BSA folks who celebrate the big EID holiday we say “Mubarak EID”, and for everybody else, here’s a fun way to use traditional calligraphic skills and merge with graffiti.

eL Seed was in New York back in May, and here is a wall he did with Jaye in Manhattan.

Timing is Everything: ABOVE

From Shoreditch here’s ABOVE with a small stencil that is all about context. He says it took him over seven months of searching night time streets to find the perfect fixed shadow on a wall, but we think he just is a slow stencil cutter. “I am attracted to the concept that the stencil and it’s context can change literally from day to night,” says ABOVE in the description accompanying the video. So apparently it is not just about context. “Timing is everything!” says he.

Aeon – Bogan in London via VNA

In Australia they are called Bogans. We just call them a family reunion. But when Aeon puts on that mullet and mustache and acts a fool while spraycationing in London, we think he may also be inventing a certain kind of drag. No need to be derogatory – It’s all about inhabiting your character and owning it, people!

Don John Does Hans Christian Andersen in Denmark

Danish Street Artist Don John is typically known for his fluorescent ferocious, if stylized, stencilled illustrations of beasts and bearded men (or combinations thereof) on the street and in doorways. Today we see a more reverent side of the artist as he completes a portrait of the Danish author and poet Hans Christian Anderson. The creator of Fairy Tales is best known world wide for his childrens stories including “The Tinderbox”, “The Princess and the Pea”, “Thumbelina”, “The Little Mermaid” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes“.

Not only that, he lived right around the corner from this new giant likeness. “He was born in Odense and the mural is located across from the house where he grew up, in the direction he is looking,” says the artist.

“Made in Oaxaca” Shifts Street Art Eyes to Historic Mexican City

Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Oaxaca (MACO) Show Features Pedro Alonzo and Friends

Already a cultural capital of a quarter million, the city of Oaxaca itself is a World Heritage Site and sits six miles east of Monte Albán, the Zapotecs city that is traced back to 500 BC. For MACO to invite curator Pedro Alonzo to create a show inside and outside on the streets is a stroke of inspiration and the quality of the selection of artists for the exhibition only confirms the inspiration.

Today on BSA Roberto Shimizu, who owns and oparates MUJAM (Antique Toy Museum of Mexico), shares with us the images he took while checking out the installations last month on the street and in the museum. Roberto has invited a number of Street Artists to Mexico City in the past to create works and to participate in community-building projects so he was very excited to learn about this pretty remarkable event happening so near to him.

“We heard that great Street Artists from around the world were having an exhibition only two days before the opening so I made the six hour trip from Mexico City with my girlfriend and two other friends the following day. Some of the best artists in the world from México, Brazil, Germany, Italy, USA and the magical Oaxaca itself gathered in the streets of this beautiful colonial town to leave striking pieces of public art,” he says.

The list includes Date Farmers, Dr. Lakra, How & Nosm, Lapiztola, MOMO, Nunca, Retna, Saner, StenLex, Swoon, Vhils, and Yescka and represents a nice blend of local and international. “To see the How & Nosm twins painting those perfect lines and then turn your head and look into Santo Domingo´s Cathedral is something that made this adventure worth it,” Roberto tells us. “Seeing Swoon posting over top some RETNA calligraphy was also an “historic” moment.”

Street Walls and a Boat Too, Alice Pasquini Paints Around London

Alice Solo and New Video of Group Painting on a Moored Boat

New work from Alice Pasquini in Shoreditch, Sydenham, Camden, and boatside along the River Thames where mud boots are required and someone to hold your ladder is appreciated .

Jessica Stewart shares these images with BSA readers of Alice in distinctly different areas of London, where the responses to the sight of an artist painting on your street vary greatly.

In Shoreditch, Alice was taken rather as part of the expected show, says Jessica. “Shoreditch is the hub of Street Art and Alice got everything from random reporters to a guide who does street art tours walking by,” says Jessica. The fellas in the spot next door seem particularly unimpressed of the lady on the ladder as they discuss the news of the day.

In Sydenham, a neighborhood that is newly embracing art to illustrate its vibrancy, the response was welcoming. “In Camden, which funnily enough doesn’t get painted much, people were much more fresh in their observations and really excited to see something go up,” observes Stewart.

Then in the muddy moorings of a dry dock barge in Bermondsey, just up river from Tower Bridge, Alice worked alongside Miss Van, Ciro Schu, Sheryo, and The Yok painting on the side of a boat while the water raised and receded and at times the artists felt like they might get sucked into the earth and the water.

“It was a crazy few days of racing against the tides to get in painting time,” says the photographer as she recalls the hotly humid air and continuously changing conditions. In the video of the boat painting party below that was shot and edited by Ben Grubb, it’s good to see Alice alongside the others even while the water rises.

Reinventing the Experience of Art

“The best art re-invents art for the next generation, but in addition, it references the long tradition that goes before.”

Jeffrey Deitch for President! In this new video interview with the departing director of Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), film maker Jesse Dylan (yes) creates a warm and human six minute re-iteration of Deitch’s core appreciation for the magnificence of art and its power to transform. The video, popping somewhat out of nowhere a week after his announced cordial departure, is not quite “A Town Called Hope”, but you can imagine this running over a bed of thoughtfully plinking piano keys just before soaring with the eagles and the candidate emerging onto a starkly lit stage to the swelling of applause.

A polarizing figure in the art world for people who questioned his appointment there from the beginning and the appropriateness of a commercially successful gallery owner/showman taking over the helm of such an institution, from this perspective it looks like Deitch has stayed true to one of his core interests – exposing new work to new audiences and challenging conventional wisdom on how to engage, and who with. Much of our own abiding love for Street Art and graffiti is based on the concept that traditional purveyors of wisdom or art criticism have no place in its curation whatsoever.

“Art in the Streets”, although obviously a programmed exhibition, succeeded in mowing down the protests of many who steadfastly resisted giving such formal recognition to the impact and backstory of graffiti and Street Art on the culture and accepted canons of art. Everyone knew it would be a messy endeavor, and given the entrenched classism, racism, and gatekeeping that tripped wires for months, it succeeded on many levels nonetheless. So, this marriage didn’t work out, and in this country more than half of them end. No one will deny his unique vision and given his comfort with discomfort and curiosity for how people can engage with art, only a fool would think Deitch won’t be breaking new ground for exploration in the future.

SANER MXDF – Mexico City

And in that same vein, prepare to be blown away by Mexican artist Saner, who embodies the true sense of inquisitive engagement and reverence for history while exploring new ways to connect. Through his own observations and study and romance with the Mexican mural art tradition, graffiti, Street Art, and his sense of magic realism, Saner shows us how to be fully engaged and question our own motivations.

In the translation here he says, “If you do not know what you are doing, or don’t have something to tell or say; a piece of yourself, a gift to the people, then what you are doing is cold, lifeless.”

Various, Gould and CHULA Pay Homage to Magic Johnson in Berlin

Various and Gould have been hitting up billboards in Berlin this summer purely out of the love of the sport. Today take a look at the homage they are doing to a basketball legend – with a V&G twist of course.

“We are aware that Johnson is wearing the wrong team colors,” says Various while recounting the magic of their second collaboration with CHULA this season. Their inquisitive natural discovery method means they have a general idea how it might come together, and like playing with Earvin Johnson, hands can go anywhere but you just better keep your eye on the ball.

Wall \Therapy : Street Art Final Shots From Rochester

Diagnosis One: America’s deflated rustbelt cities can expect a deteriorated dust bowl demeanor until bankruptcy, followed by tumbleweeds.

Diagnosis Two: Street Art and graffiti are inextricably entwined with and contributing factors for broken windows, societal disarray, economic and moral decay of the aforementioned cities.

Both are failed and need to be re-examined.

For the record, Rochester tops lists in terms of liveability, investment in new technology sectors, and has 91% of it’s citizens covered by health insurance – before Obamacare even kicks in. It has lost jobs and population due to stumbling giants like Xerox and Eastman Kodak and recent annual budgets have had significant shortfalls, but Rochester is putting up a good fight in the healthcare sector.

Dr. Ian Wilson should know. Which brings us to the second diagnosis. Ask the former Brooklyn graff writer now radiologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center if Street Art is synonymous with crime and disorder, and he’ll tell you all about the healing power of Wall\Therapy and murals.

The just-concluded community art project he spearheaded landed local and international graffiti/urban/street artists in Rochester for 10 days of painting – bringing certain parts of the city alive with curious locals hanging out in empty lots and hanging out of slow moving car windows, watching artists with cans as they bob up and down on cherry pickers.

Co-curated this year with lead organizer Erich Lehman, Wilson has pulled off a stylistically wide-ranging collection of nearly 30 walls this year that go from aesthetically sweet to academically rooted. An apt balance, if you think of Ian.

It’s also been a balancing act to please all constituencies and manage to pull off something fresh; he’s dealt with a handful of outspoken critics who question every turn he’s made, yet the festival has been buoyed by a curious and enthusiastic under-30 youth culture whose minds explode with excitement at the thought of the global Street Art scene hitting their own city.

“Mural art can enhance the life experience – an arguable effect of the arts in general,” the doctor says only a little didactically. All week during Wall\Therapy locals and visitors were taking tours on the El Camino Trail, watching walls going up in the South Wedge, and discussing art and the ideas that the artists are working with – whether it’s a portrait of Trayvon Martin in a piece by New Jersey’s LNY, a gentlemen’s fist fight by Ireland’s Conor Harrington, or a tribute to the influence of Xerox on the city by Baltimore’s Gaia.

Add the local talents, a cadre of volunteers and photographers and some serious old-skool big graffiti names from NYC rocking styles that started it all, this year there was more action than a Saturday night ER.

Finally, Wall\Therapy is Wilson’s balancing act of bringing art to the people, and medical care to communities in need. Working with a group of colleagues, he has also embarked on a fundraising program to bring diagnostic equipment to people in the developing world who lack access – and he is now talking about cloud-based diagnoses by a pool of volunteer doctors around the world who can interpret the teleradiology scans remotely.

Can he get all the funding and the equipment and the artists and the walls all together at once? “Realistically, this will have to be done in stages or phases, like some of the procedures that I perform,” he says. If you’ve witnessed this years committed volunteers and organizers at Wall\Therapy, it is a fair assumption that these dual goals of art and healing will happen on a growing scale.

“There is no hope without inspiration. The two travel simultaneously, sharing the same bandwidth,” explains Wilson.

New from Lodz in Poland; ETAM Crew and MCity

New Additions to the Great Open Gallery of Polish “Urban Forms”

As an update to our posting a few weeks ago about Urban Forms we have here some exclusive images of new work in Lodz from some local Street ETAM crew and M-City.

The ETAM crew are Przemysław Blejzyk (“Sainer”) and Matthew Gapski (“Bezt”) and are both still students at the University of Lodz but have already blown minds with their grandly eclectic characters, attention to textural nuances and their talent with color. You can see their influences from other Street Artists/illustrators with higher profiles, but their style continues to evolve into something purely theirs. ETAM haven’t yet begun to travel the circuit of cities around the world that are blooming with Street Art, but you know it’s just a matter of time.

A graphic designer, muralist and lover of architecture, M-City is also a professor in Gdansk. His distinctive monochromatic industrial age subjects and multi-functioned diagrammed machinery transform unusual spaces. He knows how to select a good context in which to unveil work that is at once simple and complex – and usually expansive. M-City has completed perhaps a couple of hundred murals around the world in the last decade so it’s great to see this work a little closer to home here in Poland.
