From Burner to Branding: Street Art’s New Role on the Wall

For three days in early June, the streets of Mollet del Vallès echoed with the clatter of ladders, the hiss of spray cans, and the upbeat pulse of DJs and market stalls. Artists from across Spain and beyond—including Laia, Uriginal, Sfhir, Lily Brik, Digo.Art, and Zurik—brought their visions to life on walls around the city, turning otherwise ordinary facades into large-scale, camera-ready installations. At first glance, the scene resembled the familiar format of the community-driven mural festivals that have blossomed across Europe over the past two decades. But here, the origin story takes a turn: this wasn’t a grassroots uprising to reclaim public space. This was a polished production by a commercial mural company with a massive artist roster and an even bigger understanding of branding, translating the original aesthetic of rebellion into a marketable vibe.

It’s easy to feel a pang of cynicism at what looks like another chapter in the ongoing domestication of street culture. Born in the neglected and often criminalized neighborhoods of 1970s New York, graffiti and the young brown/black/white kids who created it emerged with defiance, urgency, and a distinctly anti-authoritarian voice. The DIY energy and coded visual languages that fueled the subsequent Street Art scene once sparked public outrage and discussed topics that moved conversations on the street, but sometimes now are replaced with client briefs and sponsored walls. The mural isn’t a transgression—it’s a deliverable. Need a splash of urban edge for your brand? Book a mural. Want to boost team morale? Gather the staff for a graffiti-themed bonding exercise.

But the story doesn’t end there. Many of the artists involved in these commercial projects are veterans of illegal walls and train yards. They bring serious technique and deep cultural fluency to every surface they touch. And here lies the paradox of contemporary muralism: the best of these artists walk a fine line between selling out and showing up, managing to deliver public art that retains authenticity even when it’s wrapped in a marketing package. For some, the deal is worth it—access to large walls, financial stability, and the freedom to paint without looking over your shoulder.

We don’t need to mythologize the past to see how far things have shifted, and in many cases, improved. Some of the earliest street art festivals were organized by galleries and business owners who represented the same artists. Presumably, these artists are helping to pay the rent and developing their body of work. As “outside” as it once was, Street art is no longer the outsider; it’s part of the cultural toolkit, rolled out to energize neighborhoods, attract foot traffic, and present celebratory versions of “local identity.” The murals in Mollet del Vallès may not spark revolution or defy authority, but they do offer a snapshot of where street art stands today. This is what happens when “counterculture” trades its balaclava for a business card and becomes “culture”.

Taquen and Sonja Ben for Contorno Urbano Foundation/ 12 +1 Project in Barcelona

Today we visit the newest installations by Spanish artists who are participating in the community mural project that invites many disciplines and approaches to the public sphere, the “12+1 Project” in Sant Vicenç dels Horts, a neighborhood of Barcelona. In its third year, Contorno Urbano occupies a unique position in the public art world that stays clear of commercialism – as well as Street Art and graffiti – although it borrows from both. Today we see two of the newest participants and their walls.

Marking a decade as a muralist, Gonzalo Martin (1992) aka Taquen is a Spanish visual artist and illustrator with a clean linear style that may remind you of embroidery or stained glass design. His new wall for the Contorno Urbano 2020 program features a pigeon gently cradled in two hands. It calls to mind the fragility of life, and of nature.

He says that much of his work reflects a dialogue between our natural environment and our social behaviors. It’s a delicate balance, this organic relationship between us and our earth – and Taquen subtly appears to remind us that the balance is in our hands.

“Equilibrium is where I find the best way to integrate ourselves,” he says. “Without shocks, without exaggeration, leaving a camouflaged footprint that will become part of that environment naturally, without destabilizing it.”

His creative partner on this outing is Barcelona born Sonja Ben, who is creating a brash and athletic counterpoint to this world of Taquen, popping with color. Performance comes to mind, seeing these animated figures punching forward like characters in a video game, avatars of aspiration and adventure.

Using symbols as actors, her work is representing the real world – in a child’s language; processing the travelogue of the inner explorer as seen through anime and saturated digital colorways.

Is anybody listening?

Last year Vhils published this film about communication – personal, intimate, and global. We waited a year to see if it felt equally timeless as the first time we viewed it and indeed it is. Some stories like these have an additional element that secures their status. Surrounding the portraits created by the Portuguese Street Artist in Macau, this collage of images, interactions, flashes of expression and sequences of behavior is accompanied by a linear/circular narration that attempts to reconnect to a personal history while chiding the narrators own behavior.

It’s a winsome recounting of memories that are shared globally; a communal and personal experience at once told with clarity and emotional nostalgia, written and directed by José Pando Lucas.

OKUDA: The International Church Of Cannabis

One would hope that the International Church of Cannibis would look like this! Owing perhaps to psychedelic art of 1960s counterculture, liquid light art, concert posters, murals, underground newspapers, and of course kaleidoscoping the world with new eyes, the Spanish Street Artists Okuda San Miguel transformed this internal architecture into a truly holy space. Denver is one of those American cities that still has a good economy thanks to Colorado’s low taxes, growing marijuana industry and soaring real estate market. It seems like the whole city has invited many Street Artists to transform street space over the last decade and with a good collector’s base, the art galleries are busy and special projects are popping up everywhere to show off the skillz.

With a new church that uses pot as a sacrament, this project is spearheaded by Steve Berke, who’s Wikipedia posting lists him as “two-time candidate for mayor of Miami Beach, cannabis activist, rapper, YouTuber, entrepreneur, and former All-American tennis player.” Dude, just gaze at the ceilings here and you realize that the possibilities are awesome.

Parees International Mural Festival. Oviedo, Spain. Edition 2018.

A new mini-doc from the Parees Festival in Oviedo, Spain has just been released about the 2018 edition. It features on-screen interviews with many of the artists who were involved, including Colectivo Licuado, Roc BlackBlock, Taquen, Xav, Andrea Ravo Mattoni, Kruella d’Enfer, Alfalfa y Twee Muizen.

With a focus on quality over quantity, fair fees for artists and participants, and a wholistic approach to contextual creation, the festival is entirely subsidized by the Municipal Culture Foundation of the City of Oviedo – free from possible conflicts with galleries or commercial brands.

Reputation is built on behavior and results and this model for community-conscious mural making is one that organizers can be proud of.
