Welcome to BSA Images of the Week!

A few things worth catching as New York moves through the thick of summer. Not surprisingly, Carlo McCormick appears at the center of two of them—a longtime cultural force in the city’s graffiti and street art history, and today one of its sharpest and most engaged interpreters, and slyly insighful interviewers. At Studio6 Gallery, he moderates a conversation with T-Kid, SHOE, and Bando following the opening of U&LC. Downtown at 60 White, he has curated Keith Haring’s A World in Motion, tracing the artist’s movement through New York and beyond. Together, the two events place living graffiti history beside one of the figures who helped translate its visual language into the wider culture.

The urban art conversation has dispersed beyond the wall, aerosolized across cities and disciplines into a wider field of images, objects, interventions, and ways of reading urban life. Currently in Paris, Beyond the Streets gathers that expanded history in its uniquely collected example, with a knack for show and scale. Organized along overlapping tracks, it traces graffiti’s passage through photography, fashion, music, installation, ephemera, and the particular underground mythologies of the city itself.

In Berlin, a small gallery show at UN called The Urban Skin turns toward the wall as witness and archive, a surface continually rewritten by politics, weather, demolition, repair, posters, paint, and erasure.

And across New York, Gabriel Orozco’s Public Nature occupies advertising structures of the street with photographs of chance encounters and minor disruptions.

Taken together, the three projects reflect a discussion that now ranges freely between graffiti, conceptual art, and the Situationist idea of psychogeography: the city as something we inscribe, but also something that steadily inscribes itself upon us.
