Mr. Toll Goes To The Malaysian Jungle

Mr. Toll Goes To The Malaysian Jungle

We have become accustomed to being surprised by the occasional tropical bird perched above head in the urban jungle that is NYC.  But Mr. Toll has never looked so site-appropriate until now.

While taking part in the “Urban Xchange: Crossing Over” mural arts festival in Penang, Malaysia recently, Mr. Toll headed straight to the jungle with photographer Henrik Haven in tow. There he placed his now familiar clay sculptures of birds into verdant lush surroundings and you have to admit they look perfectly happy there.

Somehow climbing up and over large moss covered tree roots is a very appealing thought on this grey January day, especially when you are confronted with the bright and colorful plumage of a sculpture by the Brooklyn-based street artist. Not sure about the availability of a deli here, or a corner for that matter.

BSA-Images-Week-Nov2014

The year is winding down people, and the hits just keep on coming!

Bankers are ruling us and setting us up for their next crashing of the economy, mistletoe-carrying drones are a good idea gone wrong, and thousands continue to protest injustice toward black and brown people in Washington DC and Washington Square. In happier news: – just one photo we posted this week on Instagram – LMNOPI’s painting of a small boy protester – united the boy’s mother with the artist and us via social media, which was kind of magical. See a version of the image below. The city is also crammed with tourists (Hi Aunt Bobbie and Uncle Roy! Hi Kate and William!), drunken Santa’s are somewhat less cranky this year, and the Dyker Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn is already encrusted with Christmas lights.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring $howta, Crummy Gummy, Dhear, Don John, Eelco Virus, LMNOPI, London Kaye, Mistakoy, Mr. Oneteas, Peter Van Flores, Rocko, Tracy168, WERC, and ZIMAD.

Top Image >> A Mr. OneTeas tribute to Keith Haring appeared in Soho. Earlier in the week an “I Can’t Breath” piece by the artist appeared on the street in Williamsburg but was torn down before we could get to it. Things happen fast sometimes with this ephemeral form of speech, and some pieces (like anything too cutesy or anything with male nudity) come down fast. The artists Instagram has a version of the large wheatpaste. (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Our weekly focus on the moving image and art in the streets. And other oddities.

Now screening :

  1. Sea Walls – Murals For Oceans. Isla Mujers, Mexic

  2. HERR BÜTTNER for Whale Rights in Penang, Malaysia

  3. “90 Percent” from Save Our Seas Foundation

BSA Special Feature: Sea Walls – Murals For Oceans

Isla Mujers in Mexico provides a gorgeous venue for these street artists to come and paint. If you didn’t get to go on vacation this year, now is your chance, if only vicariously, to be on spraycation with this talented crew.

“Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans is a ground-breaking street art project created by PangeaSeed to bring the beauty and the plight of the world’s oceans into streets around the globe. By collaborating with internationally renowned artists, we create large-scale murals that focus attention on pressing environmental issues the oceans are facing.”

Street Artist HERR BÜTTNER in Penang, Malaysia

It doesn’t get more D.I.Y. than this home made video showing the process of making and wheat-pasting various oceanic life onto the streets in Penang. HERR BUETTNER, who calls himself an “offshore warrior for fish and whale rights all over the world.”

As a side note, the drawings upon which he makes his sea creatures are notices of death from a Chinese newspaper, drawing a direct connection to the death of sealife.

“90 Percent” from Save Our Seas Foundation

Life began in the ocean. Now 90 percent of the big fish, including sharks and rays, are gone. Find out more about the threats facing our oceans and what you can do to help at saveourseas.com
