“Anthropic researcher believes more than 10% chance AI ‘could kill all humans’ “, intones the BBC this week, but have they ever had the vindaloo at Atithi in Williamsburg? That dish can melt a $700 Japanese chore coat right off a trust-funder before it hits the table.
Because everything has to be about war these days, street art is featured in the mural wars of 2026, with a Macklemore mural painted in Gaza by artists Anne Redwan and Qusai al-Helo, painting the rapper draped in a Palestinian flag amid the rubble of Gaza City. Next door in Israel, a street art mural protesting the directors of the documentary called “NAZA” is probably accidentally advertising it, despite the intended sentiment. Street art has never been afraid of controversy, as you know, and it often holds a mirror up to the street.
More locally, Shepard Fairey is in Asbury Park painting in the late summer breeze on the Jersey Shore, the New Zealand street artist Owen Dippie is painting a nearly six-story portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat in Manhattan’s Bowery, and Vandals to Vanguard is showing at Wallworks/ BronxArtSpace, featuring JAKEE, QUEEN ANDREA, CLAW, SHIRO1, LEX, MRSBX and MOKA213, focusing on women who came up through the NYC graffiti scene in the 1990s and 2000s.
The famed director of Wild Style is showing another side of his talents in Charlie Ahearn – New Paintings, which opened Friday at WHAAM!, 15 Elizabeth Street, and Shepard will swing through the city this week for Shepard Fairey: Filthy Lucre Ain’t Nothing New at CART Department. The centerpiece is the world premiere of Untitled (Art Car), a 1937 Packard Touring Sedan covered with Fairey’s imagery and portraits of figures from hip-hop and punk, accompanied by new prints and original works. Fairey will do an artist talk with Carlo McCormick on the 24th at 4:30 pm, followed by an opening reception.
And now to the current interview with the streets – mainly New York, some Berlin – this week featuring works by AH Cru, D7606, Dan Witz, Drecks, Duality Industries, Gats, IMK, Irak Crew, MKCV Lucy, My Dog Sighs, OXY, Por La Vida, Spockman, Universal Humanity, and Y.E.R.K.E.
