Skount, Kera, SokarUno Paint Outside New Refugee Camp in Former Berlin Airport

The combined creative efforts of friends Skount, Kera, and SokarUno on a recent Saturday in Berlin possibly reflect the state of many recently arrived who are living near it. The historic Tempelhof Airport here was closed in 2008 after about 80 years in service and reopened as a recreational park in 2015. Now it is slated to become one of the biggest refugee camps in Europe. Already the former aircraft hangers are occupied by a few thousand refugees, mostly from Syria. By the end of the year the former airport grounds are expected to house nearly 7,000.

Got the “Missing Berlin Blues” : Urban and Contemporary

Got the “Missing Berlin Blues” : Urban and Contemporary

Exactly a year ago we were in Berlin as invited guest curators by Urban Nation Museum’s Director Yasha Young to curate the 7th Edition of Project M.  Our exhibition, “Persons Of Interest” was aesthetically rich and culturally relevant in the windows and on the facade of the under-renovation UN haus, and the positive feedback we received lasted a number of months. Each artist had dug deep in their research and were inspired to bring a Brooklyn-Berlin historical and contemporary story to the street in a meaningful way.

The indoor exhibition at the museum’s headquarters overflowed onto the streets on opening night as well; with artists, fans, curators, honored cultural muses, and officials from Berlin’s formal arts infrastructure all abuzz with the exchange happening in Kreuzberg.

As Ms. Young and her teams continue to build the cultural foundation of UN with a dizzying array of programs, initiatives, and artists this year leading to the official opening next spring, we remark on her singular vision as a cornerstone of the museum.

With a finger on the pulse of many movements within the current Urban/Contemporary scene Young has made some bold and sharp choices to get an institution like this underway. With a clear sense of the potential that this global scene has always shown, Young has harnessed goodwill and top talents in the urban arts community and is gradually attracting the eye of more formal institutions. Undoubtedly in many ways UN has already made history.

So to mark a year since our first show with UN we’re looking at a treasure trove of photos of works on the streets that we didn’t publish at that time. This city is singular in it’s permissiveness to graffiti and street art – a tacit but undeniable appreciation for its eclectic  contribution to contemporary art, the life of the culture. Berlin also somehow understands the intrinsic value of supporting artist communities. A laboratory on the streets, Berlin continues to afford art space to take shape before your eyes.

Personal Touch: Kera in Kardiff Renders 125 Piece Abstract Mural

Berlin’s Kera just finished this 125 piece mural in Cardiff, Wales as a commercial gig for a sports and leisure center building called Stadium Plaza. What is interesting about the project aside from its scale and the repetitive grid of bent iron sheets floating like a fragmented epidermal layer just outside the contiguous surface of the building is Kera’s thought process for creating and executing the job.

An artist whose work in graphic design contributes to an affection for crisp geometry as it translates into biomorphic shapes, Kera has been studying color, various printing techniques and façade design for a decade and a half. With these curved surfaces he could imagine a greater connection with technology inspired by his study of haptics and the interaction of touch with computer applications, a field that has been pioneered at M.I.T. since the early 1990s.

“The playground can never be big enough,” he says when talking about this series of screens that he touched with 200 cans of color over 6 14-hour days of work, constantly adjusting stroke and can control according to his distance from the surface and its curvature among other tactile/aesthetic considerations. Abstract and spatial, the muralist sees almost no difference between his physical interaction with design in public art/mural projects and his print and digital work. With this integration of virtual with physical, at least in the thinking and planning stage, one can imagine a true merging of art and technology – perhaps enabling applications such as long distance drone painting from your desk – who knows?

Skount and Kera on a Wall and a Train in Germany

Skount and Kera on a Wall and a Train in Germany

Skount has been experimenting with abstract patterns in some of his new work, especially this new wall with his bro Kera in Berlin. The attraction of abstraction continues to appear in Street Art and murals, and our theory today for its resurgence is that it is an unconscious way of assembling the multiple media/entertainment streams that we are bombarded with today and imposing some order on the chaos.

In addition to this new wall the guys had an opportunity that most street artist/ writers would jump on if given the chance – a whole train car in Jena. A modern urban archetype of near mythic proportions, hitting up a train is immortalized in many artists minds as a symbol of the earliest days of graffiti, even if the car is out of commission. These two friends took it and gave it their best shot.
