Welcome to BSA Images of the Week!

The city is now under a Monkeypox state of emergency thanks to a declaration by our state governor as of yesterday. Also jujitsu triumphs over random public punching, New York City children would still want to play Nintendo and Gameboy in the event of a nuclear attack, and we actually have a lower crime rate than the 80s/90s – contrary to narratives of bedlam and hoopla in the streets of Gotham.

However, there do appear to be more sharks around this summer – and not just your cousin Melvin and his buddies at the pool hall. Ah, New York, your grizzled, gritty exterior hides such a fascinating crushed-velvet heart beating inside…

We’re mainly happy that it’s not a thousand degrees on the streets this weekend, a welcome relief to the heatwave. Ice cream, anyone?

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring: Faile, Stikman, Sticker Maul, Degrupo, Homesick, Cone, and Ked.

The Weird World of the Weird Crew in BK

The Weird World of the Weird Crew in BK

Things are looking weird in Brooklyn at the moment thanks to Cone, Dxtr, Hrvb, Look, and Vidam.

The Berlin based crew are in town for their show at Exit Room that opened last night and as soon as they hit the streets they also knocked out this wall in BK. A collective of 5 individually talented character-based painters and illustrators, the pop-comic-zine-tattoo-ink-skater influences all have an interplay in their various collaborations. Here is the latest in the warped vision of the Weird Crew.

BSA Special Feature: NYC Subway from Paul Whitworth

We start this week off with some home made subway train porn with a soundtrack by the Brazilian Girls singing in French. It’s a mesmerizing reverie with some good shots of 5 Ptz.

Jet Martinez, Painter & Muralist

American painter and muralist Jet Martinez from Oakland talking about his show last month in Denver – his influences from Mexican culture, folk arts, and contemporary culture.

Monochrome: Sofles

Great writer of course. That’s why you’ll endure the advertising for the paint company here.

Mutiny of Colours – Iranian Street Art Documentary

Take a look at this interesting project, and over-the-top special effects that are meant to be comedic, if not darkly reinforcing some stereotypes you may have. It’s not easy to make a documentary and this one is about a burgeoning scene in Iran, a country where the penalties for graffiti are draconian.

HULA paints “Imua”

Follow Hawaii born artist Hula on his surfboard as he paints “Imua”.

Epic Rap Battle : Ninja Turtles V. Dudes of the Renaissance

Yo, did you see our piece on Owen Dippie’s new mural yesterday? Somebody sent us this epic rap battle between the masters of Renaissance painting and the cartoon action heroes of your childhood. Cowabunga dudes!
