A wild week in world geopolitics, terror, social crisis – interpret them as you may through the prism of art collecting and fandom – as Miami Art Basel and the Wynwood District were bursting with high prices, high emotions, high celebrity-counts, and people who appeared to be high almost all the time. There were also heavy rains, big name music performances, custom designed cocktails, luxury brands, brand fusions, and sponsored walls and events everywhere. Also a stabbing.

Once we can sort through the best photos we’ll definitely share some of the great work with you this week.

Meanwhile, Street Artists continue to create in cities elsewhere and while Miami is celebrating brands, logos and luxury, on the other side of the ocean Brandalism completed a 600 kiosk takeover in Paris this week skewering all of the above and the undue influence corporations are having in writing environmental/trade laws. On the aesthetic tip we’ve recently made a mental note that photo-realism is now reaching a critical mass. So there you are.

These two pieces are part of the NUART collection of murals painted for previous editions of the festival. They are not freshly painted but we wanted to publish them as they are calling our attention to a topic that is current and urgent and addressed by world leaders in Paris for the COP21 Climate Summit 2015 as well as dozens of Street Artists with the #brandalism campaign.

One cool thing about this piece: The plaid pattern was done by hand with gaffers’ tape – it isn’t freehand painted or stenciled or printed. It’s a 3D piece, including the silvery collar portion. There was a tag and a code at the collar but it was too faded for us to read. From what we could read the tag is #IywIkr (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Periodically it is a worthy practice to consider how many masks one wears, and why.

What are you projecting? What are you concealing? Or are you simply an open book for all to read, no constructed identity whatsoever; just a fresh wholesome apple growing on this tree ready to be picked?

99%ers, Occupiers, and Anonymous activists are wearing Guy Fawkes masks to project a unifying image of breaking a corrupt system and preventing identifying individuals. In their highly produced and staged videos so-called ISIS members are concealing their identities from those who would like to know exactly who they are and who is backing them and to instill the fog of general fear. This years most talked about Halloween mask in New York was the Donald Trump mask,  perhaps as a way to express disgust and derision of the person depicted as well as to deliberately evoke our fears that such an aggressive ignoramus might win any election, let alone for, you know, President of the US.

Spanish-now-Amsterdam-based Street Artist and fine artist Skount has been examining masks in his work for a few years from a historical perspective as they relate to social identity as well as in performance, theater, and the sacred. Often we observe that his figures’ faces provide opportunity to travel into space or mystic realm, his costumes rich with folk traditions and magic.

More recently he says that his examination has become more personal, with considerations of Freud’s studies a hundred and twenty years ago into the mechanisms of shielding ourselves psychologically with our constructed masks, deflecting critical analysis of our defects, projecting our virtuous aspects.

In this new collection of works for Skount’s opening of “Projections: Internal latent” in Gold Coast, Australia tonight at the 19 karen Gallery, Skount is inspired by the inner self as it may be expressed via classic theater, cultural ornamentation, and our concept of deity. Using traditional painting he incorporates hand-made glass collage and even LED lights  to reflect an inner universe, invariably projected outward – an alchemy of presentation for all to see, and perhaps to hide behind.

Banksy in Gaza: Vacation Promo

This new video from Banksy takes you on a grim tour of Gaza that is laced with sarcasm bordering on total cynicism. Released on his website Wednesday with a few photos from his trip, Banksy appears to have stenciled the last standing door in the ruins of a building. The anonymous UK Street Artist uses his art and satirical way with the language to make his point. “Gaza is often described as ‘the world’s largest open air prison’ because no-one is allowed to enter or leave. But that seems a bit unfair to prisons – they don’t have their electricity and drinking water cut off randomly almost every day,” he says on his page. His video says he climbed through tunnels to get there but maybe Banksy was in Tony Blair’s suitcase – the UN website says the former Prime Minister of the UK was there mid-month. “Gaza is a metaphor for all that is wrong,” wrote Mr. Tony Blair in an article after visiting Gaza on 14 February.

SOFLES Projection Mapping of His Mural in Melbourne

Selina Miles again directs and produces a film of Sofles at work that transcends the experience and gives you a sense of awe at his work, which truthfully is already often awesome. We’ve been a fan of and producer of events with projection mapping so we are glad to see a talented street artist use the technology in an effective way. The video begins innocently enough with some inking out an illustration on a canvas, then buffing of a wall in Melbourne. Later the sun goes down, and BAM!

We’re very pleased and thankful to be included in this short list chosen by the editors of Huffington Post Arts & Culture as a story they are most proud of publishing last year.

In her introduction to the list, editor Katherine Brooks writes:

“It turns out, 365 days is hard to summarize in anything but a laundry list of seemingly disparate phenomena, filled with the good — woman-centric street art, rising Detroit art scenes, spotlights on unseen American art– and the bad less than good — holiday butt plugs, punching bags by Monet, Koonsmania. But, as a New Year dawns, we found ourselves just wanting to focus on the things that made us beam with pride in 2014. So we made a list of those things, a list of the pieces we’re proud of.”

In fact, we wrote 48 articles that were published on the Huffington Post in 2014, and as a collection we hope they further elucidate the vast and meaningful impact that the Street Art / graffiti / urban art movement continues to have on our culture, our public space, and our arts institutions.

Creasing the Onassis from iNO

Here’s a very respectful mural painted on the Onassis Cultural Centre by Greek artist iNO on the occasion of “No Respect”, an exhibition focused on public contemporary forms of art in Athens. We like the full name of the exhibition ; “(Dis)respectful Creativity: Graffiti & Street Art on Contemporary Society & Urban Spaces”. Dang, wish we were there for that one!

 

Last Breath IV. in Melbourne

Living in any gentrifying neighborhood in Brooklyn, you eventually fall in love with destruction. The wordsmiths at Last Breath have been doing enough of these exhibitions inside soon-to-be-demolished spaces to have coined it deliciously: “This an attempt to make the most of the final days of a spacious warehouse, now void of any life, before its meaning and beauty are forgotten. We occupied the space and invited artists to celebrate the last days of this soon-forgotten construction. Now, the building and its final beautification will fully perish and on its grounds, yet another materiality will rise.” Have a bite!

 

Poesia: “Deconstructions”

And for dessert, an opus from Poesia; a backwards-masked undripping of color blocks and shards of spray. The titular head of Graffuturism lets us into his space and it is open for exploration and deconstructing.

“The LP 550-2 was transformed into a massive, moving piece of Lister artwork to raise funds for ToyBox International, a charity dedicated to raising funds to benefit sick and disadvantaged children.

The work was unveiled at the Barbagallo showroom in Perth today, with Lister saying he wanted to make an impression both on the car, and the charity.”

Meggs “Beauty In Tragedy” in the Tenderloin in San Francisco

Meggs was in San Francisco last month bringing his inner demons to a rolldown gait in the Haight – okay – actually it’s the Tenderloin but that didn’t rhyme.

The Australian Street Artist favors forms of duality, questioning our true nature, and sometimes arriving at a riotous indictment of it through a splashing fantasy superhero treatment in blood, sweat and myth. Saying that this one entitled “Beauty in Tragedy” is for his TL familia, Meggs  lines are a bit more distinct and defined as if influenced by West Coast tattoo culture; he even chooses a few iconic motifs which are inked across thousands of bodies across this great land – the skull and the rose.

ROA Diary : New Work from Australia, Argentina, Brazil, and Panama

“I felt an intimacy with them…bordering on frenzy [that] must accompany my steps through life,” said the celebrated John James Audubon, the French-American naturalist and painter more than 200 years ago of his deep love for birds that began as a teenager and lead to his illustrations of the still revered book The Birds of America. By now we may consider the Belgian artist named ROA to be an Audubon of the Streets, so committed he is to documenting by hand and sharing with the public his studies of the animal world on walls, especially those that are often overlooked or dismissed as pests.

As we have tracked the aerosol orinthologist and urban naturalist for you during his travels of the last few years, his dedication to showcasing the oft-marginalized creatures of towns, cities, and regions around the world has not waned. Like Audubon, his depictions have become progressively more accurate in detail and now give a greater  sense of mass, texture, and the presence of the subject.

Today we bring you new unpublished photos from some of his recent travels to Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Panama, along with some insights from ROA about some of the animals he has come in contact with. Not only do we not recognize a number of them, we also probably haven’t seen their skeletons or musculature, which the artist sometimes peels the skin off of for us to inspect.

As a body of work ROA’s mounting collection of birds and rodents must be nearing a hundred or so around the world, yet he continues to unveil more. As ROA told BSA a few years ago, “I like rodents. Birds and rodents. Without having made a choice, I feel really good painting birds and rodents.”  We are very happy to bring you these newest birds and rodents for you to enjoy.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA:

“This past November I was invited to Melbourne for my solo show ‘Carrion’ in the Backwoods Gallery. The installation I built for the show was inspired by the numerous amount of roadkill that there is on the Australian continent. During my stay I painted a few days in the Healesville Sanctuary which specializes in rescuing and recovering native Australian animals and conducts breeding programs for almost-extinguished species. The sanctuary adopted a litter of orphaned marsupial babies found in the pouch of a mother who had been hit by a car.”

One morning after a storm as I walked to the gallery through a park I found a dead bat. When I looked under its wings I also discovered a living baby, which I helped to rescue and it is doing fine.

Here you can see that I painted an echidna (first image), an egg-laying mammal that I had spotted a few days earlier while in a car driving in Tasmania.

The skeleton images are of a wombat, a marsupial that often is hit by cars in Victoria and should always be observed after finding it to assure that there is not a living baby left in the pouch who needs to be rescued”

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

After his visit to Melbourne, ROA traveled to Argentina where he was hosted and entertained by EVER and who showed him a great time for the New Year’s holiday in Buenos Aires.  They also each did a new piece side by side while he was there.

“I painted a Serenia (sea cow) paradoxically also a ‘cow’. It’s a native (Patagonia) sea mammal and an herbavour,”says ROA. According to online sources Brazil outlawed hunting of sea cows (or manatees) in 1973.

Reminding you of the animal-as-food connection, ROA completed this partially skinned bull on the terrace of his friends place at the Post Bar and ‘Hollywood in Cambodia Gallery‘. “Maybe is is a sort of ‘Memento Mori’ in this beef and BBQ country,” he jests in a half-serious wisecrack

São Paulo, BRAZIL

ROA brought four new friends along to his first visit to São Paulo, a city that he has wanted to visit for a long time. “In March I stayed there a month and it was like a dream that finally came true. I loved it,” he says of the visit that was hosted by the people from Mathilda Cultural, who showed him around the city. Included in the walls were a bird, an anteater, an anteater, and the largest rodent in the world a capybara.

PANAMA CITY, Panama

After Brazil, ROA visited Panama City at the invitation of the first Bienal Del Sur Panama 2013, a huge cultural festival that celebrated the 500th year of the discovery of the South Sea.

Finally, a new book cover by ROA

In March, 2013 ROA was one of ten Street Artists commissioned by Pinguin Books UK to create a cover for their series pairing Street Artists with contemporary authors whose modern classics novels are being re-issued.

A photo of ROA’s piece below graces the cover for the re-issue of singer, musician and  author  Nick Cage’s novel “And The Ass Saw The Angel”.

New Hunting Ground Gallery Launch. (Melbourne, Australia)

New Hunting Ground

 

New Hunting Ground will open its doors for the first time at 7pm on Friday 21st June, 2013. The brand new street and contemporary art gallery is located in a unique warehouse space in one of Fitzroy’s last industrial laneways.
New Hunting Ground is Directed by Shaun Hossack, the founder of Juddy Roller Café and co-founder of the annual ILL-Logic Outdoor Art Exhibition.  
The first show, also called New Hunting Ground, will feature artists from Europe, Australia , Canada and the USA. The lineup includes John Aslanidis, E.L.K, Jaws (Da Mental Vaporz), Ears, Does (Love Letters), Adnate (AWOL), Taylor White, Max Berry and more. The full line-up can be viewed on the New Hunting Ground website.

An Exhibition of new paintings and installation by SKOUNT (ESP)

“Dreams are not just messages (coded messages, at that), but are also an aesthetic activity, a game of the imagination that has its own value. Dreams are proof that fantasies – emotional immersion in the visualization of events that have never and may never occur – are one of the profoundest necessities for human life. The characters that come from my imagination are my own possibilities, those that never came to bear, or those still on my horizon.” – Skount

Inspired by the classical Spanish theatre of his hometown, Skount’s oneiric masked characters beckon the viewer from the urban environment into their mysterious and playful dreamscapes. The great playwrights of Skount’s youth formed a lasting impression, where he regards life as a wonderful play, in which everyone has a role. Driven by the fundamental desire to free his own mind, Skount’s creativity knows no bounds. With a background in graffiti, his artistic expression spans paint, paper, music and performance, to video art, sculpture, and installation. Skount’s irrepressible curiosity for other cultures has inspired him to travel and study different forms of creativity and traditions around the world. Currently based in Amsterdam, Skount has worked and exhibited throughout Spain, Europe, China, Mexico, Israel and the United States.

Opening Night – Wednesday 15th May 2013 – 6pm to 9pm
Exhibition continues until Sunday 19th May
