Retramp Gallery Presents: Howtokillagraffiti “Figurenknäuelsz” (Berlin, Germany)
Retramp Gallery Presents: Howtokillagraffiti “Figurenknäuelsz” (Berlin, Germany)
April 9, 2021 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Reuterstraße 62, 12047 Berlin, Germany
Solo show from 9.04.2021 until 25.04.2021
We are happy to invite you to our first solo exhibition in 2021 of Berlin painter Howtokillagraffiti.
Having returned from Songzhuang, an art colony in China, where Howtokillagraffiti has been intensively working on practicing oil painting for six years, he now presents his newest works at “Figurenknäuelsz” - realized in his studio in 2020 and during his residency at Retramp Gallery in 2021; conceptualizing the themes of Body, Mind, and Machine. Sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract, Howtokillagraffiti’s works do not care about representing the real, the visible or a clear-cut narrative through color, but about human existence and the expression of emotions which are placed above the intellect.
Howtokillagraffiti works intuitively and has taken upon himself to bring the essence of his large-format, outdoor “Graffpainting” to the canvas. Using a mixed technique of oil paint and spray-paint on linen, the artist creates a unique imagery, conglomerating in fascinating “balls of figures” which take the viewer into a poetic world of surrealism and subconsciousness. Their strong expressionist vein will certainly not leave you untouched.
Curated by Katia Hermann.
Opening: Friday, April 9, 3 pm - 7 pm
Opening Times: Thursday - Sunday, 3 pm - 7 pm
Closing/Finissage: Sunday, April 25, 3 pm - 7 pm

These tenets set the mood in his paintings. Whether you like them or not, you just can’t stop looking at them. Dorothy Circus Gallery Presents: Miss Van "Pale Moonlight Muses" (London, UK)
Dorothy Circus Gallery Presents: Miss Van "Pale Moonlight Muses" (London, UK)
April 15, 2021
35 Connaught St, St George's Fields, London W2 2AZ, UK
Dorothy Circus Gallery London is proud to present to its public the solo show Pale Moonlight Muses by the renowned Street Artist Miss Van. The exhibition features a brand new series of oil paintings and drawings by the artist and will open from 15 April 2021 until 15 May 2021.
Straddling the prohibited atmospheres of Moulin Rouge and Botticelli's renaissance beauties, Miss Van's subjects carry the visitor through a long voyage of the senses. The artist focuses once again on the female figure, each portrayed in different costumes. As described by the artist, the series "focuses on the expression, the aura, and sensuality of the Muses. These steady, intimate and timeless portraits convey a sense of mystery. Glamorous darkness causes the viewer to dive into the painting and embark on an introspective journey. I sketch directly on the canvas to keep the excitement of not knowing how the final painting will look like and enjoy the journey of experimenting in the making."
Miss Van's female figures are characterised by a profound aesthetic tied to costume history and a sensibility to assimilate a plethora of cultures; they symbolically depict the independent woman that travels, which moves and challenges us with her presence. The new series of Muses, depicted by this Wandering Artist's intense brushstrokes, will lead the viewer through a provocative journey that challenges all assumptions. The artist explains, “I want the viewer to feel the need to touch the painting … to be physically and emotionally attracted, to come closer, just as if magnetised … and seduced in any kind of way”
Characterised by soft curves, porcelain skin, and long cascading hair over sinuous bodies, the women portrayed in the Moonlight Pale Muses series speak of Miss Van's battle against the status quo. The artist asserts a strong sense of emancipation, accepting one's own body and challenging the establishment. Miss Van's muses' iconography reminds us of the young Pietro da Cortona's Pictorialism, especially his cycle of Santa Bibiana. However, they can also recall the more recent, violent fights for women's rights, with a strong reference to Frida Kahlo and Tamara De Lempicka's art. |

Hashimoto Contemporary Presents: Augustin Kofie "State Of Mind" (Manhattan, NYC)
Hashimoto Contemporary Presents: Augustin Kofie "State Of Mind" (Manhattan, NYC)
April 17, 2021
210 Rivington St, New York, NY 10002, USA
Augustine Kofie - "State Of Mind"
Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present State of Mind, our debut solo exhibition with Los Angeles-based artist Augustine Kofie. Made over a period of nine months under quarantine, the collection is part of Kofie’s ongoing industrial approach to fine art, which incorporates techniques such as overspray, tape blocking, detailed handwork, deconstruction, and draftsmanship drawn from architecture, graffiti and California car culture.
The particularities of quarantine shaped the process and thus the work itself. Unlike the usual linear development of paintings from start to finish, the State of Mind collection took a much more circuitous route.
“Some of these works were very frustrating to manifest. On the one hand, I had all this extra time, but on the other, it took much longer than usual for things to take shape. Emotionally and tonally, the works run the gamut from angst to harmony. My feelings are in the brushstrokes, the movements, the process of repeatedly adding and taking away, the layers of time it took to complete these paintings,” stated the artist.
The circular form, always prominent in Kofie’s earlier work, appears here to be breaking down.
“Where your eyes want to continue to complete the circle, you are stopped. With painting, I am in control. The pandemic was a stop, an interruption, a loss of control. So these interrupted circles, which break off and take new paths, are life interrupted,” Kofie elaborated.
With art supply stores and estate sales—Kofie’s two primary sources of tools and materials—shut down, a new technique emerged. Three of the works in the collection have a textural wood support, created by collaging found materials from the artist’s archive onto hand-made wood panels. This underlying structure, painted over entirely, comes through nonetheless, adding a hidden layer of meaning, a pentimento that also speaks to our varying, overlapping states of mind this year.
For every solo exhibition, Kofie creates a soundtrack. The music is assembled as part of the work process, which is both sonic and pictorial. This mix blends experimental hip hop with chill wave, including extended, up-cycled sophistso-pop saxophone, 80s synths, new wave breaks, lo-fi telefilm intermissions and poignant dialogue relevant to the exhibition theme and tone.
The gallery will be open by appointment only. In order to ensure the health and safety of visitors and staff, please note that masks are legally required for entry. To schedule an appointment, please click HERE.
The exhibition will be on view Saturday, April 17th to Saturday, May 8th. For more information, additional images, or exclusive content, please email NYC Director, Jennifer Rizzo at nyc@hashimotocontemporary.com

Please note this will be a socially distanced in-person event. The event will be held in the BDC's Community Garden, which is located adjacent to the BDC Annex building at 364 E. 151st St, Bronx.
Join photographer Joe Conzo Jr. as he presents his iconic body of work documenting the birth of hip hop in the Bronx and the rerelease of his book Born in the Bronx: A Visual History of the Birth of Hip Hop.
Hip hop first became a part of the mainstream music industry in the early 1980s, when major record labels released albums from such accessible groups as Run DMC and the Sugarhill Gang. But the true origins of one of the most powerful pop-cultural influences in the world are in the spontaneous, progressive musical culture that grew out of tough Bronx neighborhoods of the 1970s and led to a renaissance of poetry, music, and fashion. Through years of research, writer and curator Johan Kugelberg has pulled together the scattered remains of a movement that never had its eye on posterity. The book includes the improvisational artwork of previously unpublished street flyers of the era, Polaroids buried for decades in basements across the Bronx, and testimonials from influential figures such as Tony Tone, LA Sunshine, and Charlie Chase. Through the work of pioneering hip-hop photographer Joe Conzo–the man The New York Times calls “the chronicler who took hip hop’s baby pictures”–Born in the Bronx presents a unique introduction to an explosive and experimental period in music history.
Conzo co-authored Born In The Bronx: A Visual Record of the Early Days of Hip Hop in 2007, which has long been out of print. This new expanded edition is published by 1XRUN. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.
