BSA-Images-Week-Jan2014

We start this weeks collection of images from the street with a new piece in Bushwick by Joe Iurato, a New Jersey based Street Artist who also, as we learned via press release this week, has been selected to co-curate the newly announced Mana Museum of Urban Arts in Jersey City with another stencillist on the  street, Logan Hicks. Billed as the first museum of its kind, Director Eugene Lemay says it will be comprehensive and interactive and programming will begin as early as this September.

Mr. Lemay and co-founder Yigal Ozeri have expressed and demonstrated a sincere affinity and enthusiasm for the creative spirit since Mana Contemporary opened here in ’11 and this 100,000 square foot space represents just the audacity of hope that is demanded when building a stage for urban/street/graffiti art and its multitude of tributaries. New York and this entire scene is about 5-10 years overdue for this kind of bold development and we say, nevermind the armchair critics, let’s get going!

Here our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Art is Trash, Bast, Bio Tats Cru, Bishop203, Charlie Chaplin, Crash, Damien Mitchell, Dan Witz, Forest Ghost, Freddy Sam, Hiss, Hot Tea, Joe Iurato, King, Li-Hil, LMNOPI, Nick Walker, Olek, Paper Skaters, Shepard Fairey, Skount, Stinkfish, Tripel, and Zola.

“Recently South Africa celebrated the 20th anniversary of freedom day commemorating the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994.They were the first national elections in South Africa in which the franchise did not depend upon race.

My mural is of a photograph taken on this day in 1994.With a flock of birds flying through the middle representing freedom.Showing that to be free we need to work together, we need to live together.

Freedom is to be human. And to be human is to be connected.

My mural is not celebrating Freedom day but rather looking at what freedom really means and how far we really have come and how free we really are within South Africa and within a global context” ~ Freddy Sam

Skount and Kera on a Wall and a Train in Germany

Skount and Kera on a Wall and a Train in Germany

Skount has been experimenting with abstract patterns in some of his new work, especially this new wall with his bro Kera in Berlin. The attraction of abstraction continues to appear in Street Art and murals, and our theory today for its resurgence is that it is an unconscious way of assembling the multiple media/entertainment streams that we are bombarded with today and imposing some order on the chaos.

In addition to this new wall the guys had an opportunity that most street artist/ writers would jump on if given the chance – a whole train car in Jena. A modern urban archetype of near mythic proportions, hitting up a train is immortalized in many artists minds as a symbol of the earliest days of graffiti, even if the car is out of commission. These two friends took it and gave it their best shot.

Skount and Pau Quintana Jornet Make a “Spring Offering”

Skount and Pau Quintana Jornet Make a “Spring Offering”

In Amsterdam the temperature is above freezing and the trees are beginning to show little buds on the branches. With any luck this new “spring offering” by Skount and Pau Quintana Jornet will usher in the end of winter faster.

Inspired by Norse mythology, their mural is a modern interpretation of the goddess named Freya, who, not surprisingly, rules over matters regarding fertility and love, and also provides for those killed in war. With a nod to Norse sorcery, war, and death, there also represented is a holy tree named Yggdrasil that reaches far into the soil and far into the heavens.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2014

In between snow storms, there has been some Street Art and graff to be seen this week, and not surprisingly, some of it is surprising (see the Tupac/Rosselli mashup).

We had the great honor of hiking up, over, and around the crunchy white / grey / black Brooklyn Appalachian snow mountains that now clog our sidewalks along with a few visiting Afghani graffiti/Street Artists when the temperature was about 15 degrees. No mountain goats encountered although a couple of trucks almost mowed us down. The guest didn’t mind because it’s freaking cold back in Kabul too. More on that visit soon.

Also if you didn’t see the announcement this week Swoon and BSA are going to be at the Brooklyn Museum in April. Hope you can make it!

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Adek, Ainac, Broke M.C., BTM.14, Cartoon Bacon, Cruz, Enzo & Nio, Kai, Lewy, See, Seedr, Skount, and UFO907.

Skount Reveals “Inner Colour” in Amsterdam

Skount Reveals “Inner Colour” in Amsterdam

After a year that included painting walls and exhibiting canvasses and giving talks about his mythologically inspired painted universe in Australia, US, France, Spain, and the Netherlands in 2013, Street Artist Skount ended 2013 with a big wall back in Amsterdam called “Inner Colour”

He says that he was motivated by an observation that most people create a mask to hide their real emotions and he thinks it creates a kind of identity disorder and loss of the inner self. He describes the colorful mural as a “metaphorical representation of an imaginary colorful soul, a capture of that special moment when she or he removes the fake mask and starts to enjoy the moments in life as a child in a playground would, sharing and transmitting all that we are, colour, imagination, positivity, energy and good vibes with all the people around, and with the rest of the world.”

Here are some images of that work as it progressed in December.

The Hours Presents: Skount “FRAGMENTS OF MYTHOLOGICAL DREAMS” (Sydney, Australia)

Skount
FRAGMENTS OF MYTHOLOGICAL DREAMS

An Exhibition of new paintings and installation by SKOUNT (ESP)

“Dreams are not just messages (coded messages, at that), but are also an aesthetic activity, a game of the imagination that has its own value. Dreams are proof that fantasies – emotional immersion in the visualization of events that have never and may never occur – are one of the profoundest necessities for human life. The characters that come from my imagination are my own possibilities, those that never came to bear, or those still on my horizon.” – Skount

Inspired by the classical Spanish theatre of his hometown, Skount’s oneiric masked characters beckon the viewer from the urban environment into their mysterious and playful dreamscapes. The great playwrights of Skount’s youth formed a lasting impression, where he regards life as a wonderful play, in which everyone has a role. Driven by the fundamental desire to free his own mind, Skount’s creativity knows no bounds. With a background in graffiti, his artistic expression spans paint, paper, music and performance, to video art, sculpture, and installation. Skount’s irrepressible curiosity for other cultures has inspired him to travel and study different forms of creativity and traditions around the world. Currently based in Amsterdam, Skount has worked and exhibited throughout Spain, Europe, China, Mexico, Israel and the United States.

Opening Night – Wednesday 15th May 2013 – 6pm to 9pm
Exhibition continues until Sunday 19th May

Images of the Week: 03.03.13

NY weather remains cold/rainy/crappy on the streets still but we actually saw a Street Art tour guide plodding through Williamsburg yesterday pointing out Os Gemeos, El Sol 25, Mr. Toll, and COST paste-ups and telling stories about “beefs” to a handful of cellphone snapping Street Art fans, so Spring must be coming!

By the way, in case you were interested, “The Splasher” identity apparently applies to anyone who splashes paint anywhere today. Remember that dude who was the first “Splasher” and who enlivened many a PBR cocktail party conversation in the late two thousandzies? Remember the outraged manifestos about Street Art years ago – weren’t those wheat-pasted with shards of broken glass? Did he move on to other things? Teaching art therapy? Training sea lions? People magazine should do a “where are they now” story about “The Splasher” right?

Here’s our weekly interview of the street, this week featuring Bast, Blacksheep, Centrifuge, Daan, FRYMS, Hellbent, JM, Joe Iurato, Matthew Deston Burrows, Meer Sau, ND’A, Olek, Saane, Skount, and Young and Sick.

A lot of advertisers have used QR codes on the street to guide you to more “content” if you simply scan them off the poster or billboard with your cellphone. That’s exactly where Street Artist Meer Sau hopes to meet people in this new conceptual piece on the street that ponders how everyday life is completely infiltrated by digital, and how it’s winning our attention from the physical. “I often catch myself walking around and just looking at my f-ing smartphone, checking office mails, typing text messages or just seeing what´s new…instead of keeping my eyes open for the real world – the weather, the people around me, nature …  simply everything,” explains Sau.

“But when I raise my eyes I just see everyone else is doing the same thing – especially the youth – Sitting next to each other, not talking to each other, but using Facebook to contact each other. They are hunting “likes” and judging their friends by their popularity on Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram and so on. I’m interested in seeing how far this is gonna go. Actually, I don´t wanna know.” – Meer Sau

Images of the Week 06.17.12

Welling Court, in Queens, NYC is a city block where three-family homes intermingle with small family owned business — a nice old-fashioned model with today’s 1st and 2nd generation immigrants taking a crack at an American dream. The art-minded Buxtons, Allison and Garrison, never seem to tire of providing a safe, roomy space to artists to create within and for the third year they have hosted “Welling Court” here in this neighborhood. But it’s more than a bunch of mismatched weirdo art kids getting up on walls with their own vision and isolated from their surroundings. Allison and Garrison want all the kids to play together nicely and that’s why yesterday there were also bicycle races down the main block with a chalk finish line, a section of wall reserved for all ages to try their can skillz, and that’s why moms and dads  brought out food in metal trays and set up barbecues and used a truck as a mobile dj booth to blast cumbias and reggae inflected dance/hip-hop/two-step/classic rock all up and down the block.

As we celebrate Father’s Day today we gotta hand it to the ones who stay involved and engaged in their kids lives, and to the stand-in Dads who give guidance and encouragement to all of us when the real ones aren’t to be found. We also salute the Buxtons’ experiment in building art and community here, where aerosol fumes mix with barbecue smoke and an international bevy of Street Artists come to let their guard down and get their game on. It’s not commercial, often exceeds expectations, and always engenders feelings and behaviors of “family”.  And doesn’t everybody benefit from that?

We begin this Sunday’s Images of the Week with a small selection of some of the completed murals from yesterday. We’ll bring you the full account later in the week. The second part of today’s images show BSA readers some exclusive images of new Street Art sent to us from around the world. Artists include, Brett Armory, Cekis, Dan Witz, Hellbent, Michael Aaron Williams, Olek, R. Robots, Rene Gagnon, Skewville, Skount, Stormie Mills, and Yote.

Let’s start off with this little bundle of joy from New York Street Artist and fine artist Dan Witz, who may have based this portrait on someone he knows quite well.

Street Artist Yote sends this tribute to an artist and teacher. “Frederick Brown recently passed away and I wanted to dedicate this mural to him. It is entitled “Flowers for Frederick.”  He was best known for his portraits of jazz singers and musicians.  I talked to him on the phone this spring in hopes to get advice on how to loosen up my style and not be such a perfectionist from a real expressionist.  He was too sick to talk for long but I do know he used to instruct students to complete two dozen paintings in a week and things like that to get them out of their head and into painting”~  Yote

Images of the Week 03.25.12

Saw my first barefoot hippie walking down 7th Avenue on Friday and it was like spotting a Robin on the lawn in Union Square Park. SPRING! Spring time hit New York like a truckload of thick sweet kisses and homeboys started checking every cute move of all the shorties, who mysteriously also fluffed up all their magnolia pink feathers and almost imperceptibly put a bit more sa into their shay. Don’t ask us what any of that means, except that when the days get all comfy and warm like these, it’s all about the birds and the beeeeeeees, B.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, with some special shots by Jaime Rojo from a secret place in the Bronx as well as some contributions from Lima, Peru by Adolfo Bejar, and in Essen, Germany from Skount. Names this week include DCT, Elliot Tupac, Essam, How & Nosm, EKG, Keith Haring, Mariposa Mentirosa, Radical!, Seth, Skount, V, and Zam. First we start out with some spring flowers by an unknown artist.
