Skount and the Projected Mask of Self

Periodically it is a worthy practice to consider how many masks one wears, and why.

What are you projecting? What are you concealing? Or are you simply an open book for all to read, no constructed identity whatsoever; just a fresh wholesome apple growing on this tree ready to be picked?

99%ers, Occupiers, and Anonymous activists are wearing Guy Fawkes masks to project a unifying image of breaking a corrupt system and preventing identifying individuals. In their highly produced and staged videos so-called ISIS members are concealing their identities from those who would like to know exactly who they are and who is backing them and to instill the fog of general fear. This years most talked about Halloween mask in New York was the Donald Trump mask, perhaps as a way to express disgust and derision of the person depicted as well as to deliberately evoke our fears that such an aggressive ignoramus might win any election, let alone for, you know, President of the US.

Spanish-now-Amsterdam-based Street Artist and fine artist Skount has been examining masks in his work for a few years from a historical perspective as they relate to social identity as well as in performance, theater, and the sacred. Often we observe that his figures’ faces provide opportunity to travel into space or mystic realm, his costumes rich with folk traditions and magic.

More recently he says that his examination has become more personal, with considerations of Freud’s studies a hundred and twenty years ago into the mechanisms of shielding ourselves psychologically with our constructed masks, deflecting critical analysis of our defects, projecting our virtuous aspects.

In this new collection of works for Skount’s opening of “Projections: Internal latent” in Gold Coast, Australia tonight at the 19 karen Gallery, Skount is inspired by the inner self as it may be expressed via classic theater, cultural ornamentation, and our concept of deity. Using traditional painting he incorporates hand-made glass collage and even LED lights to reflect an inner universe, invariably projected outward – an alchemy of presentation for all to see, and perhaps to hide behind.

Amsterdam Dances with Graffuturism and Stencil Masters

Amsterdam rocked the decks this month to celebrate urban contemporary art and street art in the Netherlands with visual and music based events giving artists many platforms to shine.

Graffuturism, a term and movement coined a handful of years ago to describe an intersection of graffiti, street art, and abstract geometry continues to stake out new territory and here were gallery and street exhibitions proffering some of the current practitioners whose work could be described as such.

The 5^th Urban Art Festival Amsterdam featured their own collection of Graffuturists from Europe, the United States, and South America including Poesia, the unofficial founder of Graffuturism in a show of works on canvas, prints, drawings on paper, murals and site-specific abstract installations.

Running concurrently was a Stencil Masters show featuring some of the top knife-wielding artists known on the street today along with a few senior early proponents. The diverse program of gallery, street installations and DJs courtesy of the ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) helped further contextualize the art forms for a wider audience of fans.

Skount, Laguna and Cerezo and Their Delusions of Quixote

Skount “To Be Or Not To Be”, Sarah Bernhardt & James Lafayette

Skount is debating whether to be or not in this adaptation of a hundred plus year old photo of Sarah Bernhardt, who holds the court jester Yorick’s skull in hand. A grave contemplation of suicide that leads the Hamlet character to contemplate the great leveling force of death on all stations and classes, this particular depicting of Shakespeare has had a profound effect on Skount.

“This photo has always been poetic for me since I first saw it,” he says, “I see in the photo a woman with a really special life that is intense, hard, full of difficulties and now finally a satisfactory life,” he says of the James Lafayette photograph that was possibly taken at the turn of the 20th century.

“To be or not to be,” is perhaps the most noted excerpt from the play and is

also the title of Skounts’ mural for Street Meet at Mainfranken Theater in Würzburg, Germany. See below the original photograph and the artists’ initial sketch for the wall.

Skount and Rone : Lady Lying Under an Amsterdam Bridge

Collaboration between artists can be fraught with peril; styles don’t mesh, egos don’t play nice, mismatched palettes produce nausea.

Here is an example when it works. Rone’s realist/pulp fiction figures wouldn’t normally dance with Skounts’ folk patterns and mystical symbols but here they are complimentary. Rone provides the girl, Skount gives her a dress.

Wonder what she thinks about when she opens her eyes and stares at the bottom of the bridge, listening to the traffic rumbling across it above her. The Australian artist Rone paints portraits of sexy women – not in a sexualized manner, just oozing with sexiness. Skount, who is from Spain but lives in Amsterdam takes inspiration from old masters and popular culture as well as from traditional ornamental geometry and illustration. This is an unusual pairing that works well as collaboration.

Skount Paints an Inner World Outside in Kuwait City

Kuwait is upping its game by encouraging more Street Art and artists to come and create – like this new one by Skount completed as part of the Alwan Art Festival.

In his typical cosmological and spiritual manner, Skount invokes the planets as experienced by figurative vessels in folkloric inspired attire. Here “In/Out Inner World Projection”, the title of the mural, you have an idea of the artist is bringing to the wall after he says he had a few days experience learning about the Kuwaiti people and the culture.

“Each individual comes from a determined inner ‘universe’ that is made of a story, culture, ideology, beliefs, norms, religions and different perceptions,” he says. He would like the mural to talk about “how we share and receive information from other individuals from another different inner “universe”, and how these experiences and perceptions “can make the individual psychologically project a world or inner universe that combines both peoples.”

The project is organized by Visual therapy and we are pleased to share these new images with BSA readers.

Skount, Skullduggery, and a Faceless Spanish Conquistador

“This historical character is a clear example of how a human being in search of better life, new experiences and knowledge, can become corrupted by power and greed, causing death – and even attract own death,” says Skount of this faceless conquistador now painted in Almagro, Spain.

Certainly Diego de Almagro was not without valor and bravery – conquesting Peru, “discovering” Chile, and one of the first Europeans to have a child with a native Indian. But all that plundering of wealth and land and treasure eventually let to a number of enemies who wanted him skewed like a martini olive.

Our thanks to Skount for this history lesson and possibly life lesson, depending on your interpretation.

Skount & Amsterdam DNA: Dutch Historical Art and an Exploded Prism

‘Amsterdam DNA: Street Art’ at the Jongensbinnenplein of the Amsterdam Museum.

Amsterdam Museum featured Street Artists in their recent Museum Nacht on November 8 as part of an outdoor exhibition called AmsterdamDNA. As Street Art continues to make its way into museum collections, it is interesting to see this work exhibited just outside the door and in the courtyard. The assortment of artists on display in this show curated by Streetart.nl and Roel van den Sigtenhorst were Skount, TelmoMiel, Super A, Laser 3.14, Max Zorn, Bustart & Zaira and Hugo Kaagman.

Here we take you to a corner spot by Street Artist Skount, who created a piece entitled “Implosion, Essence of a Memory” in collaboration with The Visual Brothers, intended to look at the DNA of Amsterdam and Dutch artists in particular. Skount uses symbols and artworks that have become “part of the collective memory”, he says, “reinterpreting them through a kaleidoscopic vision in fragments.”

Within the fragments are symbols referencing the history of the Dutch culture and milestones of fire, flood and plague. Artists and their well-known works that appear include, Van Gogh and “The Starry Night”, Hieronymus Bosch and “The Peddler”, Rembrandt and “The Jewish Bride”, MC Escher and “Eye”, and Rembrandt’s “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp”.

“This installation represents a break into subjective memories, which may or may be, some of the characteristics that determine the nature of an ‘entity’,” says Skount.

Autumn in New York yo! Crisp cool, sunny days. Girls in tight sweaters. Boys in combat boots. Every cool air festival you can think of is all happening simultaneously – skateboarders closing down Kent Ave on BKs north side, Indian Larry’s block party with motorcycles of every stripe, and this years San Gennaro festival in Little Italy looks like it wants to reclaim this part of town before it is subsumed by the crushing wealth machine now chewing through Chinatown. Literally the festival looks like it spans the entire length of Mulberry from Canal to Houston – that’s longer than the line to get the new iPhone in Soho!

But neither one of those will compare to todays’ expected line of concerned citizens snaking through the streets in Manhattan to address the effect of climate change. Coordinated with marches in cities around the world it’s estimated to draw 100,000 people. We’ve had a sneak peek at what Street Artist Swoon has in store for an installation at the end of the march, including some of the very same materials she just used for her “Submerged Motherlands” at the Brooklyn Museum, but arranged entirely cleverly differently.

A few weeks ago at Nuart we were invite to speak about activism on the street around the world using Street Art as a form of expression, and we are surprised to see a rising wave of it that not many seem aware of – including some of our artworld peers. This week alone a few Street Artists have created new work to promote today’s march. It is not hard to get us into the street on a regular day so this is just one shiny bauble of grassroots creativity that you won’t want to miss. Also, technically, it’s still summer until Tuesday.

Skount and his “Inner Universe Projections” in Amsterdam

Skount sent us a some images of a commercial gig he got with a small club and aspiring center of culture in Amsterdam and we thought you would enjoy seeing how his work on the street translates to indoor mural-ish work. Entitled “Inner Universe Projections”, Skount says it is inspired by a scaler field in quantum field theory. Clearly this triptych is an interweaving of traditional folk art with space exploring dimensions.

“I recently visited Detroit, MI and created some new work while I was there. When I told people I was going to Detroit the typical reaction was “It’s Dangerous” Or “That place is dirty!” or they would just make a face about it like I’m crazy for going. After visiting I felt, yes there are some areas that are not great to hang around at, but I also fell in love with the people there and how they take a lot of pride in their city. So the two works loosely were inspired by people’s reactions to visiting Detroit using references of “crime” and “cleaning up” with my twist of humor put in them” – CG
