Joshua Liner Gallery Presents: “Direct Address: An Inaugural Group Exhibition” (Manhattan, NYC)

Joshua Liner Gallery is proud to announce the opening of its new home—a street-level, 2,600-square-foot exhibition space located at 540 West 28th Street in the Chelsea Arts District. The gallery’s relocation to a ground-floor space contributes to the life of this burgeoning block, which boasts new high-rise construction, the final section of the High Line, and redevelopment of Hudson Yards just to the north.

To celebrate this milestone move, the gallery is pleased to present Direct Address, an inaugural group exhibition featuring works in diverse media by longtime gallery figures as well as new additions to the program. Participants include the following artists:

Alfred Steiner, Clayton Brothers, Cleon Peterson, Dave Kinsey, David Ellis, Evan Hecox, Greg Lamarche, Ian Francis, Jean-Pierre Roy, Kris Kuksi, Oliver Vernon, Pema Rinzin, Richard Colman, Riusuke Fukahori, Shawn Barber, Stephen Powers, SWOON, Tiffany Bozic, Tomokazu Matsuyama, and Tony Curanaj.

Direct Address makes full use of the gallery’s 500+ square feet of added space and 15-foot ceilings. Graphic design, typography, digital imagery, and assorted printing techniques variously inform works in painting, mixed media, and collage by the Clayton Brothers, Evan Hecox, Greg Lamarche, and SWOON. Allusions to cartoons, cultural icons, and the collective unconscious turn up in watercolor-on-paper works by Alfred Steiner, as well as in Cleon Peterson’s stylized depictions of mass violence. Working in enamel on aluminum, sign-painter-turned-artist Stephen Powers combines image and word in a new selection of his visual aphorisms, or Daily Metaltations.

Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to announce the 2012 Summer Group Exhibition showcasing 16 artists, including established gallery regulars and newcomers. This presentation will feature painting, sculpture, and drawing, with works by the following artists – Alfred Steiner, Clayton Brothers, Cleon Peterson, Damon Soule, Daniel Rich, David Ellis, Ian Francis, Jean-Pierre Roy, Kris Kuksi, Mars-1, Oliver Vernon, Pema Rinzin, Riusuke Fukahori, Tat Ito, Tiffany Bozic, and Tomokazu Matsuyama.

Showing for the first time at Joshua Liner, the Southern California-based Clayton Brothers (Christian and Rob) draw inspiration from their immediate environment, incorporating local businesses, neighborhood regulars, and snippets of overheard conversations as subjects for their paintings. Composing their pieces conjunctively- motifs, gestures, places, and figures reoccur within different works, creating inter-linked dramatic scripts. The duo received their first major museum exhibition in 2010 with Clayton Brothers: Inside Out at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMOCA) in Madison Wisconsin.

The German-born, Brooklyn-based painter Daniel Rich will also be showing for the first time at the gallery; known for his matte-flat interpretations of photojournalistic images, Rich will include the painting BT Tower London—a seductive, large-scale close-up of the famous telecom tower—which will be featured in the fall exhibition Daniel Rich: Platforms of Power at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Additional newcomers to the gallery include Alfred Steiner, whose delicate watercolor on paper works depict a mashup of plant, animal, and human anatomy with objects from material culture; Jean-Pierre Roy’s futurist/fantasy landscape paintings; hyper-stylized graphic abstractions by painter Mario Martinez (aka, Mars-1); and works of 3-D painted fish encased in resin by Japanese artist Riusuke Fukahori.

Summer Group Exhibition will feature gallery regulars, including painters Tat Ito and Tomokazu Matsuyama, whose colorful, large-scale works blend contemporary hard-edged abstraction with traditional Japanese motifs. Also on view will be works of sculptural assemblage by Kris Kuksi as well as paintings by Cleon Peterson, Damon Soule, David Ellis, Ian Francis, Oliver Vernon, Pema Rinzin, and Tiffany Bozic.

Gallery Heist is pleased to announce the opening for its One Year Anniversary

Show, “Till Death Do Us Part” a group exhibition celebrating a year of work

since the gallery’s inception. The opening will be held on Saturday, November

13, 2010 from 7-11pm. The exhibition will be located at the Gallery Heist Annex

at 1036 Hyde Street.

A new venue specific to the anniversary show.

The anniversary show will present the work of emerging and established contemporary figures from the Bay Area, as well as artists hailing from New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Melbourne.  Along with paintings, photographs, mixed media works, and video, the show will include an installation by Ryan de la Hoz and a performance piece by Adam Rozan (of the Oakland Museum), as well as musical performances by Mark Aubert and TM.

Guest curators Allison and Garrison Buxton, of AdHoc gallery in NYC, will be co-curating and co-hosting the exhibition.

Featured artists include; Brett Amory, Adam Caldwell, Seth Armstrong, Mario Wagner, David Choong Lee, Oliver Vernon, Sean Desmond, Mike Giant, Mike Kershner, Gaia, Adam Flores, Justin Lavato, Ryan De La Hoz, Henry Gunderson, Mario Ayala, Roman Koval, Adam Rozan, Maja Ruznic, Ludo, Doodles, Helen Bayly, Miso, Daryll Peirce, Deborah Yoon, Allison Buxton, Garrison Buxton, Ezra Li Eismont, Shawn Whisenant and Bunnie Reise. These artists have come to represent what is and will continue to be the ethos of Gallery Heist.

The main location of Gallery Heist, at 679 Geary Street will feature an installation that will provide  an opportunity for viewers to observe the obscured process of curating and running an art gallery.

Included in the installation will be various pieces of ephemera from the first stages of opening the gallery through the thought processes behind every show; photos, videos, notes, business cards, correspondence between the curators and artists, writers, editors, and figures within the art community will be displayed.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the artists will have access to several walls around the city to use as their canvases and to promote the show while contributing to the burgeoning local art movements. This process will be documented and displayed during the exhibition.

The exhibition will be on view at 1036 Hyde Street from Saturday November 13 – November 27, 2010. Viewing hours will be Tuesday – Saturday 4-8PM and by appointment. Gallery Heist is located at 679 Geary Street San Francisco, CA 94102.

GAIA “The Reinvention of Nature” at Gallery Heist (SF)

gaia_poster_horizontal_2-01_web-1Gallery Heist is pleased to present The Reinvention of Nature, the San Francisco debut exhibition for Brooklyn/Baltimore based street artist GAIA. The Reinvention of Nature – Opening reception: Saturday, May 15, 2010, 7-11pm MAY 15 – MAY 31, 2010 Gaia is a Brooklyn and Baltimore based street artist with a background in Printmaking and Sculpture. He is currently enrolled in his final year at MICA (Maryland Institute of Art) with a major in interdisciplinary sculpture. At the age of 21 Gaia has built an impressive resume having exhibited in art fairs and galleries through out Brooklyn, London, D.C, Miami and Los Angeles. His work has appeared along side street art contemporary geniuses such as Blek Le Rat, Shepard Farey, Swoon, Matt Small, D*face, Sweettoof, Brian Adam Douglas, Lucas Price, Nick Walker, Slinkachu, Imminent Disaster, EVOL, Pisa 73, Oliver Vernon, and Dalek just to name a few.

Marrying the animal and the human form, Gaia conjures mysterious figures that carry a heavy sense of mythology and recall a past when man and nature were once united. These romantic creatures stand in relief to the urban environment as they lurk and beckon in the city’s forgotten and neglected spaces. The conveyance of their story relies on the chance coincidence with a passerby, and even in that intimate moment, their narrative is precarious and delicate. Gaia works with linocut prints and painted images applied to paper and then mounted as paste ups on the street or on panels for finished works.
