Our second entry comes from solid graff photographer and NYC resident Sabeth 718, who climbs all over these streets and roofs and tracks and doorways looking for his best shots. The photo was taken in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and we can see why he likes it so much, with the sun setting over Manhattan and peering under the bridge for just a second. As quickly as the runner goes by, the light will change too. Glad he captured it and he shares it with BSA readers.

Our first entry for comes from Hieronymus, an artist and photographer who spent years in LA and now hails from from North Carolina. This is his photo of a friend at the “Miss You” installation by the Brazilian Street Art twins Os Gemeos during their show in March.

There’s No Place Like Swoon For The Holidays

There’s No Place Like Swoon For The Holidays

Going to Swoons studio in Brooklyn for a piece of blueberry pie and a cup of hot cider on a windy and rainy grey day is sort of like going home for the holidays. There are so many familiar faces here, printed and hand colored, like the ones you have seen in decaying doorways and on weathered walls around your city for years. Many have faded with time and the rays of the sun bleaching them opaque, the wind and rain battering and peeling them off in pieces. Here their faces are clear and their lined expressions, contoured hands, and personal stories are vibrant once again – here are your old friends in full regalia, happy to have you nearby to keep them company.

As you walk gently passed the 3 people on their knees pressing large sheets of translucent paper onto a freshly inked 6’x 8’ linotype carving and are careful to duck behind one drying piece hung from above to dry, you may strike up a conversation with a tall handsome woman named Tennesee with dangling earrings, or ask a round-faced lad about the tinfoil and craft paper boat he’s just made in Swoon’s ad hoc workshop – and learn the name of the Lego captain he’s made to guide the vessel.

The double height factory loft ceiling, peeling brick walls, flat files, buckets of tools, and long work tables piled with cookies and bagels feel like a welcoming place, and Swoon invites you to help with the lino printing or to pick up and inspect still-damp portions of a sculpture she’s made recently. If there was a fire place crackling under a limestone arch of a high-collared violinist suddenly pirouetted out from behind a pile  of reclaimed wood and began playing Christmas hymns, you wouldn’t be surprised. In this most sacred place, an artists’ studio, it feels like home.

JC Has Something On His Mind in Instanbul

As winter settles in, I’ve been thinking about getting a fur hat. Is that wrong? How about fake fur?  What about just hoisting a cat up on my head and balancing it there? They sleep all the time anyway so they might as well provide some service to mankind aside from hunting the occasional mouse.

Street Artist JC has been in Istanbul with his bud MuryzOne and they may have the same thing in mind. Here are couple of shots of new stuff they did while there.

New Labrona Shots in Miami

“It was an amazing trip!,” says Canadian Street Artist Labrona, who was in Miami for the Art Basel 2012 festivities this month. While there he collaborated on four walls. Two were with the Canadian art collective En Masse, who has been working with a monochromatic palette to allow a multitude of styles to co-exist in the same venue peacefully; drawing attention to the techniques and hand style of the various contributors while presenting unified mural.

“The other two walls were with my long time painting buddy Omen and new painting buddy name Five,” says Labrona. Here are a few shots highlighting his work.

Images of the Week 12.16.12

Ahhhhhhhhh, we are all going to Hell in a hand basket! That’s what your music teacher Mrs. Penny Whistle said as she picked that last little caramel-colored shard of peanut brittle out of the box at her desk and crunched loudly as you played your Top 40 musical contribution for the whole 6th grade class to listen to on your mini-speakers. And in fact, she may have been correct. Look at what has happened since then! Also, the Mayans tell us we have about 5 fricken cold December days left till we all die a calamitous death, which is why I have done NO Christmas shopping.

Friday on Bushwick Avenue in Brooklyn you may have also learned about where YOU are likely to go after the big apocalypse and Jaime Rojo is pleased to share the answer photographically here (see the last picture).

Don’t Fret Brings the Comedy to Miami

Chicago based Street Artist and satirist Don’t Fret was among the many art pilgrims in Miami this month who got a bunch of work up in the streets. Occupying an unusual place among average Street Art styles and themes, Don’t Fret labors with comedy and caricature, making you crack a smile while you wait for the light to turn green.

Like any good comedian, he mines the everyday and mundane for the common occurrences and situations and makes fun of them with and gives you a little insight. He also relishes a bit of wordplay. But dang who don’t? Of course it’s all up to you and how you feel on that day. If you just got fired from your hamburger flipping gig, you may not dig it, and you’ll think these were done by some 12 year old toy with no drawing chops. Which is totally not true. He’s 13.

215 “Orgullecida” (Barcelona)

French Street Artist C215 has a new solo show titled “Orgullecida” at the Montana Gallery in Barcelona, Spain. The artist has been for awhile using a lot of color with his multilayered stencil work – expanding his established vocabulary bravely in a way that most artists are too afraid to do. His portraits are placed well, are individually hand-cut, and sprayed with a sense of the humanity he’s always giving center stage.  This show is now open to the general public.

“Kids Eat For Free” at Tender Trap (BKLN)

A phrase lifted from restaurant franchises that serve food like you are livestock at a trough, “Kids Eat For Free” is a mini survey of train riders who know the back sides of the country well. Under the moniker of The Superior Bugout, curator Andrew H Shirley continues to explore fresh talent from the emerging margin, and this group exhibition features work by North Carolina’s NGC Crew. Fresh Low-cost original Silkscreens at “First Worldwar in Silkscreen” Group Show (BKLN)

The best way to support your local artist is to give their stuff as a Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza/Soltice present. No kidding. Everybody wins. Tonight a show of original silkscreens at totally reasonable prices is at Low Brow Artique in Bushwick. For tonight’s opening of their silk screen print show where you’d be able to purchase prints for $20…yes you read it right $20 bucks buys you art from 25 artists – many of them with work on the street – from Sao Paulo, Brooklyn, Buenos Aires and Berlin. “Graffuturism” at Soze Gallery (LA)

This is like an exclamation point for the end of the year. No kidding.

POESIA, founder of Graffuturism, the term and website, continues to explore the depths of “Progressive Graffiti” or, as it was previously known, “Abstract Graffiti”. With great intelligence, passion and an acute eye for detail, POESIA brings to the forefront the importance and beauty of this emergent new direction that is impacting the Street Art and graffiti scene (with ramifications for others).

“Graffuturism” opening tonight at Soze Gallery in Los Angeles and promises a smart-headed visual feast of shapes, patterns and color from a mini-galaxy of talent from all over the world. Perhaps more significantly, it’s a bit of a decentralized movement that has been centralized for you. “Dark Corners, Savage Secrets”, Photography by Imminent Disaster (BKLN)

Self-appointed moral custodians (mostly white men) have traditionally hampered the exploration of sexuality in formal art history and the academic canon of what gets celebrated and revered continues to evolve more quickly now. The sea change that modern social liberation that was once revolutionary is now a given, but the debate of the appropriate role of sex and sexuality in the arts is far from over. We may have just quashed one Trojan horse of social conservatism in the White House, but the radical right wing has pulled the center pretty far in the last decade and some have even said there was a war on women launched legislatively throughout 2012. So we are pleased to tell you about fine artist and Street Artist Robyn Hasty AKA Imminent Disaster, who has a new show in collaboration with Alex Pergament entitled “Dark Corners, Savage Secrets”. Furthering her exploration of photography Ms. Hasty has semi-retired her now well known hand cut paper pieces and lino prints on the street and traded the cutting knife for the camera. With this show of photographs, sculptures and performance art she’s aiming to tear apart the inhibitions associated with the  sexual act. “Dark Corners, Savage Secrets” opens tomorrow at Weldon Arts Gallery in Brooklyn.

“Snap Back…” Rime and Toper at Klughaus (Manhattan)

Freshly snapping back to New York from their successful truck trip to Miami, Klughaus Gallery brings Brooklyn natives RIME and TOPER for their new exhibition titled “Snap Back – Dangerous Drawings About New York”. The storytelling show features illustration and painting inspired by personal stories. Says RIME. “This show aims to tap into our life experience coming up in New York.” Show opens Saturday.

The White Walls Gallery in San Francisco are fortunate to host Australian artist New2 with his solo show titled “In One Hand a Ghost, The Other an Atom”. New2’s work on the streets is complex and dynamic with aerosol, but his handcut collage work for the gallery is moreso somehow – maybe because of a painstaking process of arranging thousands of hand cut pieces of paper. This show opens on Saturday.

Chris Jordan “Locost Queue” Debuts from a Tower in Queens

New Yorkers will stand in line for many things; heavily frosted confections from the Cupcake Cafe, the new iPhone 17, or the chance to rub against a sweaty stranger on a light-crazed dance floor while paying 8 dollars for a plastic cup of ice. Since the superstorm Sandy hit last month, many of us have stood in line for food and blankets, and since the banking superstorm hit in ’09, many more have passed hours on the unemployment line. While we stand, sometimes we can feel time passing, the hands of the clock slowly waving past us incrementally as we fill out our forms or scroll through our electronic devices.  Light artist Chris Jordan is illuminating and projecting our waiting plight in his new installation at the top of a 14 story tower of a former bank in Queens.

“I’ve been working overtime on this installation, which on the surface is incredibly simple,” he says of his piece entitled ‘Locost Queue’, which debuted in darkness in Long Island City last night.

The forms are photographed silhouettes of people from the local neighborhood, marching slowly across the four 11-foot diameter clock faces. Describing the low cost piece that will run for 3 months as part of a group exhibition curated and produced by No Longer Empty, Jordan reveals some of the back story effort and planning that went into making this glowing show above Queens.

“This has been anything but simple to accomplish, due to numerous constraints – including having to haul all the gear up three stories by rope, through a narrow hatch,” he says as he describes the grimy ladder and port-holed room. With an extremely limited budget, the resourceful designer had to forgo the powerful high cost projectors he is accustomed to working with and devise a decidedly old-fashioned approach to light projection. Ironically, as one stands in this dust-covered belfry on a chilly winter night it looks completely appropriate for a tower built in 1927, two years before last century’s bank-caused depression.

“Despite the challenges,” he says proudly as he surveys the shadows inside the drafty illuminated room, “it’s running, and looking pretty fantastic.”

Viewing every evening from dusk to midnight through March 13, 2013.

This installation depicts a queue of people moving through the four clock faces at this historic clock tower in Queens Plaza. The speed correlates with the population increase of New York City.

Best viewing is from the park across the street from the building.

White Walls Gallery Presents: New2 “In One Hand A Ghost, The Other An Atom” (San Francisco, CA)

Complex Magazine‘s  Nick Schonberger got a sneak preview of Australian street artist New2‘s collage pieces that will compose his upcoming show at White Walls, “In One Hand a Ghost, the Other an Atom.” Each of New2′s collages is made of multiple layers of hand cut paper, the result being a super vivid and highly intricate take on the traditional style.

“[The collages] prove tremendous personal growth on the artist’s part since 941 Geary’s pioneering show. New2 is obsessed with traditional lettering, though in his technique allows himself freedom to explore more progressive forms.”

In celebration of Klughaus Gallery’s one-year anniversary, we are thrilled to announce “Snap Back – Dangerous Drawings About New York,” a dual artist show featuring Brooklyn natives RIME (Jersey Joe) and TOPER. “Snap Back” will feature illustrations and paintings that integrate elements of the artists’ past experiences living in New York City; each piece is inspired by a personal story. “TOPER is one of my oldest friends and a very talented guy with a very interesting life experience,” says RIME. “This show aims to tap into our life experience coming up in New York.”

Best known for his explosive use of color combined with dynamic lettering and innovative characters, RIME started painting graffiti in Staten Island in 1991. He spent many years mastering his style throughout New York and New Jersey and had achieved international recognition for his distinct aesthetic by 2003. In 2005, RIME moved to Los Angeles to concentrate on fine art. It was also in 2005 that he became a member of the legendary crew MSK. This marks the first time in almost a decade that RIME will be headlining a show back in his hometown.

TOPER grew up painting alongside such legends as Dash Snow (SACE), REVS, DG, SETUP, SCOPE, and of course, RIME, after the two met growing up in Staten Island. TOPER’s name has been known and respected in the New York graffiti art scene since the mid-to-late 1990s as a writer known for his distinctive New York street-motivated style, a technique he is now channeling into his fine art.
