Urvanity Art 2018 (Madrid, Spain)

It is manifest that for several decades new practices, values and codes have coexisted in the cultural landscape of our cities, occupying a place in the world of contemporary art. The issue is how to tie them together, and this cannot be achieved only by means of an urban art fair. Therefore, Urvanity has been conceived as a platform for a New Contemporary Art.

To speak of new art is to catalyze a contemporary project with a historical perspective because “all that is not tradition is plagiarism.” Notably, Urvanity advocates proposals (with a strong base in the urban context of the 1970 ́s up until today) that construct a dialogue with modernity, and, as a result, provide a setting from which we can explain the world around us. It is important not only to consider the work itself but to understand the public space where this very work is composed and that it at the least convey an aesthetic experience.

Urvanity seeks to explore and thus imagine possible future scenarios for this New Contemporary Art, thanks in part to alliances with other initiatives and promoters of culture in our city. To support the creation and spreading of ideas, as well as facilitate access to these practices of contemporary creation that define our vast cultural urban landscape.

The first Spanish fair focused on New Contemporary Art —with artistic disciplines that have started from Contemporary Urban Art or Surrealist Pop (lowbrow) across Madrid during five days. URVANITY will be the 2nd Edition from February, 21st to February, 25th matching with the Madrid’s Art Week. An invitation to discover and buy from national and international creators which take part in this artistic expression. This year, the fair will include its programme artists as Shepard Fairey, D* Face or Cranio.

The New Contemporary Art encompasses all those creators who, since the 70s, start their work in the streets and whose main supports are the walls: graffiti artists, urban artists or muralists; and that later evolve their approach and become part of both the art market through galleries and the museums programming.

International galleries attending the second edition of URVANITY are: Art in the Game (UK), Stolen Space (UK), Pretty Portal (Germany), The Don Gallery (Italy), RuArts (Russia), Vroom & Varossieau (The Netherlands), Galería Balneario (Mexico City), Le Container (France), Station 16 (Canada), Urban Art Gallery (Germany) and Jonathan LeVine Project (USA).

In terms of Spanish galleries: Swinton Gallery (Madrid), Delimbo (Madrid), Montana Gallery (Barcelona), Fousion Gallery (Barcelona), Plastic Murs (Valencia), SC Gallery (Bilbao) and Duran Online Gallery.

URVANITY ART 2018 will take place at our new venue LASEDE COAM from Wednesday 21st to Sunday 25th of February, during the Madrid Art Week. LASEDE COAM is located on an old site that used to host the Escuelas Pías de San Antón until 1995, in the Chueca district, next to Malasaña and Alonso Martínez. An iconic area with particular architectonic contrasts and diverse lifestyles, the core of Madrid’s trends, avant-garde, cultural events, fashion and art scene.

LASEDE COAM is a living space for community gathering and very proactive with culture, art, society and of course architecture matters. More than 12.000m2 distributed in 4 floors and a central garden, makes it an urban oasis that will host URVANITY ART’s second edition.
