AD HOC ART CONTINUES THE ACCLAIMED WELLING COURT MURAL PROJECT WITH 100+ ARTISTS SPANNING THE HISTORY OF GRAFFITI & PUBLIC ART  —  A Creative Event Celebrating the Streets, Solidarity, Community, and Culture.

It is the time that we bring you another outstanding rendition of this legendary annual Queens mural jam. Now in its 9th year, the art, variety, and talent keeps getting better! Join us Saturday from 12-8pm for a block party and a ton of great art, all FREE.

The History: The Welling Court Mural Project began after Jonathan and Josh Ellis, representing the Welling Court community, met at Ad Hoc’s Bushwick gallery in 2009. They loved the experience and invited Ad Hoc Art to bring their expertise, appreciation, and vision to beautify their Queens neighborhood. It was a perfect fit, as there were surfaces to be painted and Ad Hoc knew people loved painting surfaces. Jonathan had already planted the seeds and acquired permission to paint, which was key. Thus, having the community support and a timely visit by Poland’s wall-crushing M-City, the first mural was painted in the freezing temperatures of December 2009. Ad Hoc Art used the rest of the winter to plan the launch of the first multi-block project of over 40 murals that occurred in May 2010. After continuing to hit the pavement and meet more members of the community, the project grew one mural at a time.

Melding a spectacular crew of legendary artists together with a diverse mix of fresh talent, the annual project hosts 120 murals by artists from around the corner and around the world, providing new arrays of visual experiences that change how people interact with their environment. Through grassroots outreach, word of mouth, and authentic appreciation, the project has had a dynamic and impactful evolution.

It is one of the best collections of contemporary street culture on earth, all within this hidden gem of NYC! It is on pubic streets, so it is FREE and open to the public 24/7/365.

Victor “Kid Glyde” Alicia and his Dynamic Rockers will to demonstrating old and new school breaking techniques.

Together, with the help of myriad others from the community and beyond, this project grows each year, receiving a wide range of interest and acclaim, from the likes of The New York Times, US News and World Report, Huffington Post, NBC Universal, NY1, HyperAllergic, Brooklyn Street Art, 12oz Prophet, Sold Magazine, StreetArtNYC, Street Art NY, and and many others.

Sadly, we have lost some large commercial industrial spots, at least 2 in the past year alone, so we may actually take a step backward for the first time if we do not gain some new walls soon. We hope the importance the public art and the role it plays in positive environmental quality and health is considered in the future development of the neighborhood.
