A powerful group of images this week as we do a drive by on Labor Day Weekend in New York. We know it’s the last weekend of Summer but hell no!  I’m gonna have another strawberry ice cream out on the stoop.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Alma’s, Anthony Lemer, Arnaud Montagard, Alice Pasquini, Bast, BLY, Cesar Mieses DALeast, Dek, Jerk Face, Paul Insect, Pete Kirill, Ryan McGinness, Sean9Lugo, Seymour Chwast, Solus, Swil, Tripel, Willow, Wing, and You Go Girl!

Alice Pasquini in Syracuse, Sicily. August 2014 (photo © Alessandra de Grande)

“This is my latest wall, painted in Syracuse, Sicily with the support of the Istinto Naturale cultural association,” says Alice Pasquini of this new tableau.

“Titled ‘The myth of Arethusa and Alpheus’ it was inspired by the spring of Arethusa in Ortygia (Syracuse), a body of fresh water close to the seashore. The legend says that the nereid Arethusa, trying to escape the advances of the river god Alpheus, fled by turning into a stream, eventually breaking ground in Ortygia where Alpheus found her and was able to mingle in her waters.” ~ AP

Let the mingling begin! Although you have to admit that she doesn’t look like she’s quite committed to the idea.

It’s Easter! It’s also 4/20! What kind of grass did that bunny leave in your basket this morning?

While you are chewing the chocolate ears off of your new friend you can have look at some of the springtime gifts that have appeared on the streets this week.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Alice Pasquini, Cern, Hamlet, JC, Jerk Face, Lexi Bella, Mika, Myth, Pyramid Oracle, and Tripel.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2014

Our piece on the visiting guests from Afghanistan got a lot of attention this week, as well as the Kiev sculpture by Roti, perhaps because of the ongoing powder keg in Ukraine. It is as if global interest in the power of art to affect change is in the air — we feel like we can sense a new sort of activism afoot. Or should we say #ACTIVISM ?

Meanwhile the small idiosyncratic hand-made pieces are starting to show up again in New York after a relative quiet that was enforced by the cold and snow, which both have melted. Oh, wait, another storm is coming tonight. (!) If we find that ground hog he is going to get a smack.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Ainac, DOA, EC13, Geppetto, Lambros, Mr. Toll, Olek, Richard Serra, and Tripel.

Richard Serra Sighting No. 1.
As admirers of this modern master sculptor we were treated to this sight on Manhattan streets. Usually you can only appreciate his work under heavy scrutiny from security guards, and probably no photos are allowed. So to see these sculptures on the streets and in transportation was what you call a New York Minute. Not exactly Street Art but definitely art on the street. (photo © Jaime Rojo)

If you have a healthy attitude toward discovery you are always going to be entertained by the art that people are leaving on the street. You could say that right now abstract sculpture is showing up a little more, the animal kingdom is still out to represent, and in the face of all the large murals we’ve been seeing comes a variety of small works and one-offs by people with names or those who aren’t in it for the fame. Don’t try to make too much sense of it all, though, you’ll ruin it for yourself! Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring CB23, Cholo, Dashan, Esteban Del Valle, FLM, Gilf!, Mint & Serf, and Tripel.

Images of the Week: 02.17.13

Guess it shouldn’t surprise us when we find out that the sticker, wheat-paste, or mural we published of “Street Art” or graffiti actually turns out to be a logo or promotion for someone who is selling sneakers, t-shirts, lip-gloss, tampons, or toe fungus spray. That’s how people pay the rent, yo!

After all, we get press releases all the time from “Street Artists” who purport to get up all over the place in their home city of New Jesusville – but nobody we talk to has heard of them. Eventually word gets around and its not our business to trash people. And we all know at least one or two fine artists who have used the strategy of putting their stuff on the street to add some sort of “cred” to their “brand”. Fine. And look at the countless corporate names that have been inserting (or “integrating”) themselves into all manner of social/electronic media and “stories” in the last couple of years – just to leach off grassroots D.I.Y. culture and make the money and get the clicks but not actually support the art community that birthed it. It’s a complex story.

But it’s hard not to feel a little bit like you just got punked when you walk into a store and find the stuff you shot in a putrid garbage strewn alley is now silk-screened across a cheap flask or frisbee or truckers cap, giving it about as much meaning as a Kardashian wedding ring.

What are we going to do? Oh probably nothing – there is no purity test or reliable scale for measuring when someone has “sold out” and we don’t like pompous peeps who pretend otherwise. We’re just keeping an eye out, sister, and trying not to get fooled again.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Alinic, ASK, BAMN, Chris & Veng RWK, Gilf!, Icy & Sot, Lambros, Meer Sau, Mosstika, MUDA, Pixote, Tripel, and WD.

Images of the Week 12.16.12

Ahhhhhhhhh, we are all going to Hell in a hand basket! That’s what your music teacher Mrs. Penny Whistle said as she picked that last little caramel-colored shard of peanut brittle out of the box at her desk and crunched loudly as you played your Top 40 musical contribution for the whole 6th grade class to listen to on your mini-speakers. And in fact, she may have been correct. Look at what has happened since then! Also, the Mayans tell us we have about 5 fricken cold December days left till we all die a calamitous death, which is why I have done NO Christmas shopping.

Friday on Bushwick Avenue in Brooklyn you may have also learned about where YOU are likely to go after the big apocalypse and Jaime Rojo is pleased to share the answer photographically here (see the last picture).

But before we get to your final resting place, here is our weekly interview with the street, which is very lively this week! We’re featuring 4 Burners Crew, Bast, Dasic, EKG, Icy & Sot, Lädy, HUSH, MA, Mr. Toll, Nether, Okuda, Olek, Rubin, Square, Start, and Tripel.

What can we say? Have a great week.

Images of the Week: 12.09.12

Here’s our weekly interview with the streets, this week featuring Astrodub, Cruz, Doug Nox aka the Harlequinade, Faring Purth, Herakut, How Nosm, Jilly Ballistic, MCity, Nether, RISK, Sonata, Trip, and VHILS.

We start off with MCity visiting Queens and hanging with Allison and Garrison from Ad Hoc, who helped him get some walls while he is here in New York. Then we get some Miami shots from Geoff Hargadon, and back to Brooklyn with photographer Jaime Rojo.

MCity, the Polish Street Artist paid a flash visit to NYC this week and proceeded to paint as soon as he set foot in our city. This carrousel was painted in Welling Court, Queens aided by Alison Buxton of Ad Hoc Art. (photo © Jaime Rojo)
