Sneak Peek “Concrete to Data” at Steinberg Museum

Curator and artist Ryan Seslow has pulled off an overview of art on the streets and the practices employed, minus the drama. So much discussion of graffiti, Street Art, and public art practice can concentrate on lore and turf war, intersections with illegality, the nature of the “scene”, shades of xenophobia and class structures; all crucial for one’s understanding from a sociological/anthropological perspective.

“Concrete to Data”, opening this week at the Steinberg Museum of Art on Long Island, gives more of the spotlight to the historical methods and media that are used to disseminate a message, attempting to forecast about future ways of communicating that may effectively bridge the gap between the physical and the virtual.

Seslow has assembled an impressive cross section of artists, practitioners, photographers, academics, theorists, and street culture observers over a five-decade span. Rather than overreaching to exhaustion, it can give a representative overview of how each are adding to this conversation, quickly presenting this genre’s complexity by primarily discussing its methods alone.

Here is a sneak peek of the the concrete (now transmitted digitally); a few of the pieces for the group exhibition that have gone up in the last week in the museum as the show is being installed.

GIFFITTI and the Eye Popping Animations of Ryan Seslow

You think that maybe the animated GIF is the equivalent of graffiti on the digital wall?

Artist Ryan Seslow has been experimenting for a little while with that hyper eye-blitzing looping tag called the animated GIF – and today you’re getting splendid platter of GIFs like holiday cookies glistening before you. With bright visual references to graffiti history, culture and art, Seslow manages to simplify the vernacular in a poppy way that pushes the work into a playful cartoon realm – like the stuff on subway cars in the 70s. If the connection to Street Art isn’t clear, he has also been doing artful collaborations with a number of figures you may have seen on the street and in subway stations.

“It has been great fun so far working with Cake and Jilly Ballistic and we are making more!” says Seslow of this collaborative approach to GIF making. “I wanted to work with them both because they have great contrasting work that translates well on the street, subway tunnels and as digital images online.”

So far Seslow has been “trickling out the gifs one at a time” on his blog and as a project with RJ Rushmore of the blog Vandalog. They will be exhibiting their project entitled “Encrypted Fills” at the end of January for Concrete to Data in the Steinberg Museum of Art. Seslow’s GIF animations will include a host of other graffiti and Street Artists including Stinkfish, Broken Fingaz, General Howe, Caroline Caldwell, Abe Lincoln Jr., Gaia, Enzo & Nio, John Fekner, Olek, Ryan Seslow, Swampy, Peter Drew, Adam VOID, Rone, Enzo Sarto, and Leon Reid IV.

In the meantime all these jolting lights may make you think of the first night of Hannukah (tonight) as well as all the Christmas lights that are blinking from apartment windows overhead wherever you go on the street. Enjoy!

Enzo & Nio and Their Eclectic Collaboration Bid Adieu

New York Street Art watchers over the last three or four years have been familiar with the polished irony and gentle sarcasm that Enzo & Nio purvey on often appropriately chosen walls, lamp posts, electric boxes. A collection of inside jokes rendered in a handful of styles, the duo has used photorealism, collage, cartoon, and sloganeering to speak to social ills things like consumerism, surveillance, and our passive acceptance/glorification of violence in the culture, and their own fixation with the archetypal cat and mouse game between graffiti makers and the law. With wheat-pastes and custom stickers that are cryptic, poetic, smirking, inverting, almost invariably un-permissioned, each new E&N occasions a second look and a piqued moment of curiosity.

BSA has published perhaps a hundred or so images of the pairs’ work over these past few years and with recent rather public news on Gallo’s Facebook page announcing their split, we scrambled through our collection to discover that we had, well, quite a collection. The nature of the Street Art conversation is one of continuous re-invention so we can’t all be shocked by change but as this mostly ephemeral scene evolves, we take a moment to recognize the space on the timeline that has marked Enzo & Nio’s eclectic and original voice delivered with a sense of marketing. Witty, salty, poignant and yes funny, here are some examples of their work on the street.

In between snow storms, there has been some Street Art and graff to be seen this week, and not surprisingly, some of it is surprising (see the Tupac/Rosselli mashup).

We had the great honor of hiking up, over, and around the crunchy white / grey / black Brooklyn Appalachian snow mountains that now clog our sidewalks along with a few visiting Afghani graffiti/Street Artists when the temperature was about 15 degrees. No mountain goats encountered although a couple of trucks almost mowed us down. The guest didn’t mind because it’s freaking cold back in Kabul too. More on that visit soon.

Also if you didn’t see the announcement this week Swoon and BSA are going to be at the Brooklyn Museum in April. Hope you can make it!

Aerosol Texting: The Power Of Words on City Walls

Brief Analog Messages on Walls Ape Our Digit-driven Discourse

Whether satire, slogan, or soliloquy, the anonymous street scribe shapes our experience while we walk through the city.

Boffo or blustery, a piece of poetry can sling or sting your unsuspecting heart as you round the corner or look above your head and a rallying cry will bring color to your cheeks or dread into your head. A well-crafted counterpoint can clearly confound and a cleverly flipped script will turn up your lips, but no-one can crack some cryptic confessionals or meandering non sequitors that pop and squirm under your quizzical gaze.

Whether cute or contentious, the hand-rendered words that we daily see on walls throughout the city are all speaking to us in a cooly comforting lo-fi handwritten way across the bricks and mortar, but somehow they often obey a 140 character limit too. Mercifully brief, as if targeted to our hurried pace and tightly tailored for the twitter-brained among us, these textual communications are looking for a more general audience, but an audience nonetheless.

And here we are.

This week as Banksy continues his month-long “residency” in New York, three old-school heads from New York helped keep the current hype in perspective with this half hour interview with Ricky Camelleri at HuffPost Live right in the middle of Manhattan. Marking the 30th anniversary of the movie “Wild Style” and the current concerns around the announced razing of the graffiti/street art holy place 5 Pointz in Queens, the conversation includes 70s NYC train bomber Lee Quinones, Director Charlie Ahearn, and 5 Pointz organizer/artist Meres. It’s a good conversation.

PIXOTE Outlaw

Basically an ad for skateboards, this little video gives a look at a Pixote, a writer from Rio De Janiero whose large roller tags inspired by Brazil’s Pixação movement have been popping up on walls in New York for a year or two.

“Between adrenaline, chaos, enlightenment – its all these things together,” he says about his experiences on the street.

The Lurkers in Copenhagen

The newest travelogue video installment from The Lurkers is here featuring blonds from Copenhagen, a lot of lounging, and a reggae soundtrack. What?

Anthony Lister is Never Odd or Even (Part 2)

On a backdrop decidedly classical, the swelling and heaving of the orchestra heft, fillagreed with flute and french horn, your man Lister delicately paints the orbit across this wall. Later, as installing his show, he re-writes the introductory text on the wall with a bit of black pastel stick. How often have you wanted to do that? Significantly he crosses out ~~street art~~ and changes ~~movement~~ to “revolution”.

Enzo & Nio Indoors in Cambridge

Here’s a quick video of New York Street Artists Enzo & Nio doing an installation at a restaurant in Cambridge, Mass for a special event. Witness their appreciation for collage of appropriated pop culture imagery and watch as they employ the commercial vernacular of hand postering- that is how you describe it if you are in a gallery.

If you are on the street looking over your shoulder, one may call it “smacking my stuff up on a wall”.

Pennygaff did this tribute as gravestone on the last remaining chunk of Monster Island, a very lively and engaging artists performance space/ gallery / hangout in Williamsburg, Brooklyn – now demolished to make way for glass and steel highrises. The city appears to have celebrated the scene for a number of years but is now changing the tune as corporate advertisers pay for the same walls to communicate messages. Some call it a battle for public space. Others throw their hands in the air and call it gentrification.
