Sneak Peek at Hellbent “No Wave” at Cave

Hellbent is in LA to open his show at CAVE tonight, and he shares with you these exclusive shots of the next phase of his abstract patterned color bars for the gallery he calls Mix Tapes. New is the sophistication in dimension and shadow, and a lot more white space, with pieces broken apart and reassembled in a looser, less dense buildup – a continuation of the direction he began for the “Spectrum” group show he was in last month.

“My ‘No Wave’ paintings are a further exploration of abstraction that I have been working on for the last year and half and I feel that they are going to continue to evolve,” he says. “In the same way that Richard Dieberkorn’s Ocean Park series was a 7-year journey, I think the Mix Tape series is only in its infancy.”

“With these current paintings I have been exploring leaving parts of the canvas untouched and allowing the white of the gesso to become a part of the paintings. I think this lets the painting breath and provides a ground for the viewer.”

“I have also been adding shadow to some of the different ‘Shafts’ to enhance the dimensionality of these paintings.  While in the early phase of this work I think the color itself had achieved a 3D effect, if subtly, with the shadows it is instantly apparent. I was initially hesitant about the shadows but I have been having so much fun and since I had used them in murals in the past it was an easy transition. I am having a lot fun playing with these different layers and figuring out the different planes of the canvas as I construct them.”

XCIA “Street Artist Unite” (NYC)

Photographer Hank O’Neal AKA XCIA opened a solo show “Street Artists Unite” this week in the East Village at The Dorian Gray Gallery. Of particular interest are the collaborations: Hank’s photos of Street Artists stretched across a frame and painted on by some of the current crop. Be sure to check out the one of a Richard Hambleton piece on the street that has been re-faced by Jean-Michel Basquiat and now accompanied by Chris from Robots Will Kill. Gives you a sweet brain freeze to contemplate it. The show is meant to highlight the photographic work of XCIA on the street and accompanies this springs roll-out of his book XCIA’s STREET ART PROJECT: The First Four Decades.

“Letters From America” at Black Rat (London)

Yesterday’s US Supreme Court ruling on the health care legislation that BIG MONEY has fought tooth and nail against in the US highlights the relevance of this show opening on July 4th at Black Rat Gallery. Joe Franquinha and Co. know how to put on a party for all ages and creeds. The exhibition will feature new monoprints, screenprints, drawings and paintings of a daring, fresh band of the legendary Stabby Women.

Kid Acne’s Stabby Women have been found watching over cities all over the world. These female warriors inhabit and peer out of unexpected public spaces, humanizing the urban edge with a sense that someone’s got your back.

Kid Acne has been painting graffiti, making fanzines, comics and hip-hop music since the early 90’s. His artwork has been exhibited in Beijing, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Finland, Brazil and Australia – and his signature style of illustrations have furnished designs for clients including Prada, Levis, Volkswagen, Elle, Kid Robot & Warp Records.

C.A.V.E. Gallery is proud to present new works by:

BAYO – “Inside-Outside“

Bayo’s paintings depict visceral worlds, where the main character is the psyche as an axis of conflicts. His paint strokes signal a constant path where anxiety is inescapably contagious. Characters tend to avoid frontal sight, turning their eyes towards themselves and exposing their fragility. Dispirited forms allow us to prove that their author does not follow the statutes of reason. Each piece simultaneously depicts the rigor of obsessive details, the vagueness of repetition, and the sudden explosion of motion. All in an effort to express the architecture of his emotions, with a complexity that can never remain subtle.

 HELLBENT – “A Quilted Life“ 

For his new series – “A Quilted Life”, Hellbent employs a variety of techniques that add a unique 3D quality to his work. He has developed a stencil technique that creates a kaleidoscope “quilt” of color in cubist patterns. The complex compositional puzzle of the background seems to push and pull behind bold imagery. Instead of a paint brush, Hellbent often uses a power drill to etch forms into wood panels. Always looking to expand his craft by exploring different techniques and mediums, Hellbent has also experimented with colored liquid glass – adding to the vibrant spectrum and resemblance of stained glass in his work. The complex color patterns are intricately layered, creating a dynamic and bold new collection.

HAUNTED EUTH – “All Gone Wrong“

“My new work is entirely autobiographical – calling upon, navigating and negotiating the complex relationships and experiences I struggled to balance last year. Themes of addiction, love, struggle, fear and anxiety are paramount in the work I produced for this show. This new body of illustrations is a open acknowledgment to the past and signifies a new, positive outlook on the future.”

Chris Stain Describes His New Pieces for Cave

New York Street Artist Chris Stain is making some new pieces for his upcoming show at CAVE Gallery in LA with Street Artist Veng and Taka Sudo on February 11. The signature portraits, mounted on wood, of the everyday people Stain is known for depicting, are joined here by a new one one of the noted and celebrated American poet who passed in 2011, Gil Scott Heron.

Often you catch a piece by someone on the street or in a gallery, and you wish you knew the story behind it. Sometimes there isn’t much of a story – it’s more of an aesthetic exercise.  In the case of Chris Stain, the work is frequently drawn directly from his ongoing study and observations of socio-economic conditions in American society. With his portraits he examines how people are deeply impacted by a system that they feel affected by but frequently unable to affect in a meaningful way. Other times they are simply meditations on being alive.

Each piece is made from a hand-cut rubylith film that he burned onto a screen and then printed on wood and colored in by hand. Here are some detail photos, along with Chris’s words to describe them.

For many years now I have gained inspiration from the music and writing of Gil Scott Heron. After his passing I thought it seemed fitting to create a piece in homage to the man and his achievements. If you know of Gil’s work and life you know that he struggled at times from addiction and the curve-balls that life threw at him. What I appreciate about him most is his ability to express his experiences in such a heartfelt way through music and writing.

When I was younger, in the mid 80’s, I was an avid disciple of hip hop culture. When I hit adolescents I was turned onto punk rock and skinhead culture. Obviously not the white power skins here people. There’s a good little video here explaining the history of Skinhead and where it came from.This piece is a throw back to those days and how it meant something to be a part of an alternative lifestyle.

A Small Something

This piece looks back on the feeling of first riding off on a bike on your own. The first time you leave your neighborhood and explore; freedom, in a sense. As you get older it’s not such a big deal to adventure out alone. With this piece I further explore the use of handwritten text in the layout to see how it interacts with the image. However with any of the above pieces people will read into them whatever they want which is okay with me.

What Holds Today

The title is a play on words for what today holds. It’s about trying to make it through the day no matter what’s in store. Some days are easier than others and some days you just feel like giving up on everything. So What Holds Today means whats going to keep this day together when the shit hits the fan.

Willem was a student I had in one of my printmaking classes last year. I photograph the kids as part of our self portrait project. When Willem stepped up in front of the camera with this pose I thought that there was no way I wasn’t using this picture for a piece of my own! I have painted this outside twice in NYC and once in Miami but this is the first time I made it as a finished piece for a gallery.

LUDO in NY, Chicago, and LA with More of “Nature’s Revenge”

Parisian Street Artist LUDO brought “Nature’s Revenge” to the US this month and his eye-popping surreal wheat-pasted creations are now on walls in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. By combining weaponry with insects and plants into hybrids, LUDO is using this ongoing series to draw attention to how we are messing with nature in ways we never have in an unquestioning way and at our own peril. From biotech to nanotech to robotics to remote controlled drones, the face of war is sold with branding and a sizzling “wow” factor, accompanied by vague assurances that these developments are necessary to protect us good guys from the bad ones. From the perspective of this ongoing “Nature’s Revenge” series, our romance with all things shiny and futuristic is quickly morphing out of our control and it’s likely to come back and bite us, or worse.

Using a reliably greyscale, white, and acid green palette, LUDO’s high-tech hybrids are alternately frightening and amusing, and even super cool. While a Freddy Kruger facemask is obviously symbolic, it’s pairing with a mechanical daisy is unnerving.  The wheat paste of a tarantular top-loaded missile delivery device is laughable until you see the video of unstoppable multi-limbed all terrain “big dog” robots being developed to do the same thing.  Even the bunch of grape skulls seems sort of blunt until you think of what we’re now learning about irradiation, pesticides, and genetically modified foods. Taken as a whole LUDO’s work is one of the more message-driven on the street today and is another example of the new narrative-driven story telling we continue to witness in Street Art. Luckily, it’s also visually compelling.

“Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles”

Opening in NYC at the IFC Center on Friday 09/02,.the film is about the Toynbee Tiles and an unlikely team that tracks down the mystery’s source for the better part of a decade. It won Best Documentary Directing award at this years’ Sundance Film Festival so it’s got cred.

That Was FUN! “The Grassy Lot” Opening

Congratulations to Joe Franquinha and Liza and Crest Arts for putting together a very successful community-feeling event on the grassy lot last night. A LOT of people, a LOT of art, a LOT of fun conversations. And it didn’t rain! (Even though Joe was prepared for that too) Thanks to Keith Schweitzer of MaNY and all the artists who participated. Best guest we met? Joe’s mom, who raised her boy right.

BSA In Los Angeles: Images of the Week 08.14.11

Los Angeles has it’s own sun baked vibe and rhythm and visiting street artists have been checking it out for the past week or so – dodging traffic, talking to local passersby and landlords and tenants, plugging earphones in, zoning out, painting and pasting and steadying ladders, hitching rides, hunting down burrito trucks, and finding free beer. It’s been really great to see people looking out for each other, and a salvation to witness the warm and generous hospitality of some Angelinos.

With the help of C.A.V.E. gallery’s Patrick Iaconis and Tanya Patsaouras, BSA was able to secure some cool spots for some of the artists who travelled to LA for the “Street Art Saved My Life” show on Friday night. Additionally it has been a pleasure to work with Daniel Lahoda of LA Freewalls to get some rockin’ locations downtown and around LA and to curate a little Brooklyn into the program and boost his already stellar roster of 50+ walls with Anthony Lister and Ludo. More of these walls will be coming up in the next week and more pictures for you as soon as we can post them. Also we hope to show you some of the local cool stuff we found wandering the streets.

So this is our weekly interview with the streets, featuring Adam VOID, Anthony Lister, Creepy, Cut and Paste, El Sol 25, Gilf!, Hargo, Hellbent, NohJColey, TipToe, and Vhils.
