REKA’S Ladies in Bushwick, Homage to Sandy

Australian Street Artist Reka was in town in the wake of the hurricane named Sandy and he found his plans for painting disrupted by flooded train lines, but eventually got up in three places in Brooklyn. On tour from his native Melbourne since July, Bushwick is just one more name to be tacked onto the list of places for Reka (or Reka One or James Reka) along with Amsterdam, Berlin, Bristol, London, Milan, Paris and the countryside in France.

REKA. Bushwick Five Points, Nov, 2012 NYC (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Here he brought his signature abstract portraits rendered in ochre, beige, moss, brown, black, white, rusted crimson and spice red. Typically illustrative of the female form, these figures are full of action with limbs and hands and elbows akimbo, gesticulating into air, flustered and animated with limbs bending from rivets at the joints. With wavelets of the darkest hair spilling and often with breasts barely pinned in or spinning free to make waves, Reka’s ladies in Brooklyn are unhinged consternation, contemplative and concerned, somehow heavy in their cubist side/front viewed expressions.

REKA. Bushwick Five Points, Nov, 2012 NYC (photo © Jaime Rojo)

The forms photographed here by Jaime Rojo may be cognizant of the destruction that New York is still dealing with, where homes are being bulldozed, many school buildings are permanently closed, checks are lost in the mail, and many families are reliant on others for food and shelter. Rendered in colors we associate with autumn, these new Reka figures are of this moment in Brooklyn, even as the artist moves on in search of his next spot to paint.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, today featuring AVOID, Dart, EKG, FKDL, Hellbent, How & Nosm, Ian McGillivray, ICH, Phlegm, Pop Mortem, See One, Veng from Robots Will Kill, Werds, Willow, and You Go Girl!

One note as we mark Veterans Day today in the US and this week had the re-election of a President, nothing can be more patriotic than helping out your neighbor in a time of need – and many of our neighbors here in New York still need your help. Please do what you can, whether it’s to donate food or supplies, offer a hand, or send money. Thanks.

Images of the Week 11.04.12

This was a tough week for New York and we’re still struggling to recover from the Hurricane whose name we’re tired of saying. We have every reason to believe New Yorkers will continue to pull together, as we always do. Go Brooklyn! Go Staten Island! Go Manhattan! Go Queens! Go Bronx! Go Long Island! Go New Jersey! Go Connecticut! New York, you are beautiful and we love you.

As ever, photographer Jaime Rojo was on the streets shooting a lot of stuff, and of course there was new Street Art to discover too. So here’s our weekly interview with the street, including 2501, Bast, Cash for Your Warhol, Classic, Cynthia von Buhler, FKDL, Gilf!, Hanksy, JR, Nick Walker, Pixel Pancho, Rene Gagnon, Ron English, and You Are Beautiful.

The Parisian FKDL left new stuff that appeared on the streets of Brooklyn recently, his collages now evolving to include more detailed figurework in a 1950s illustration style. Using clippings from vintage newspapers and magazines in the compositions, these wheat pastes/collages are hand colored and one of a kind, left for the few who catch sight of them before the weather destroys them. (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Many boarded up and empty lots were uncovered by the fury of hurricane Sandy this week. Many plywood fences blew up and away, exposing the hidden walls. This is an old JR piece that we have documented before but we have not been able to get inside this fenced lot until now. Naturally, it now has been transformed a bit by the contributions of tags on it, sort of emulating the stripe painted across this native American’s face. (photo © Jaime Rojo)

MOMO Does New Work in Brooklyn, Maximally

Brooklyn got a visit from former New Yorker MOMO this week as he stopped by for a few days after summer trips to FAME festival in Italy, the Bien Urbain project and a collaboration with Eltono in Besançon, France, and just before he headed to Baltimore for a lecture today at MICA.  A staple in the mid-2000s NY Street Art scene known by many for his wheat-pasted tissue paper geometric formations and screen prints, you may remember more recently seeing his massive work for Baltimore this spring for Gaia’s OWB project and we’re really glad he is participating in our gallery show curated by Hellbent in Red Hook right now called GEOMETRICKS.

MOMO. Bushwick 5 Points (photo © Jaime Rojo)

An easy-going ever-thoughtful modern minimalist who has a love for graffiti fundamentals, MOMO is usually experimenting with his pieces, his process (see his MOMO Maker), his techniques. You may grow familiar with the vocabulary he uses but you’ll never see the same outcome twice because his exploratory mind is always spacing out new ways to deduct, add, unmask, recombine, and ultimately find balance.

Here he leaves his newest marks on a wall in Brooklyn in collaboration with Bushwick Five Points.

Overunder LNY and ND’A Study and Play in Bushwick

Even as they shoot spit-wads at the windows and doodle intensely in the margins of their notebooks while constantly shifting in their chairs in the back row of English class, these two ADHD kids are paying sideways attention to the teacher and not really trying to cause trouble. If you want to keep their attention you just need to keep them engaged and help them channel their energy productively because the next thing you know Overunder and ND’A will be eyeballing the fire extinguisher or pulling apart the wall clock to see what makes it tick…

Overunder (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Two of the new crop of painters on the street who can’t keep their metaphors unmixed, Overunder and ND’A are sprinting through Brooklyn looking for new walls and ladders right now, and they’ve covered a lot of space already this new fall semester. The fast talking buddies have a way of playing off each others’ fantastic ideas and stories that will get you lost if you try to follow them, with words and symbols and meanings tossed into a clothes dryer and tumbled. Give ’em a spot, some bucket paint, and a couple of cans, and who knows what you’ll get. But you won’t be bored.

While their individual styles are distinct, with OU blending realism and figurative forms with architectural elements and ND’A giving a gritty low-brow cartoon monster treatment to his symbols and characters, the fluidity of undulating shapes and the free flow of ideas keeps these two in the same school. Here are a couple of new pieces of theirs for you to grade as they run down the hall and out the double back doors onto the playground to swing from the monkey bars and look up girls skirts. Here on this wall Overunder found a way to interact with that other devilish, horns ‘n all bad boy LNY. The results are well balanced with both pieces complimenting each other.

Concrete Jungle from Russia to Bushwick

Feliks Mashkov and Vadim Gerasimenko are the Russian collective known as Concrete Jungle. The duo call Vladivostok their home and are visiting NYC with five other artists as part of CEC ArtsLink’s Global Art Lab program. Designed to support an international exchange of ideas and perspectives, the program involves communities and individuals in Central Asia and Russia. Susan Katz, the St. Petersburg based program director, invited BSA to meet with the visiting artists for an informal chat about Street Art in the US and the current New York scene.

Concrete Jungle. The initial sketch for the mural. (photo © Jaime Rojo)

Concrete Jungle employs methods and techniques seen in Street Art, public art, and commercial art and the two have collected a number of interior and exterior walls over the last few years with the same can-do D.I.Y. attitude that we see on the street today – with a detailed clean graphic finish. Feliks attended art school for five years and recently received his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture. A 2007 graduate of the Vladivostok Art School with a specialization in teaching painting, Vadim is currently a student at the Far East Federal University in the Department of Graphic Design.

Feliks and Vadim, with the help of Brooklyn based Street Artist Specter, secured a wall in Bushwick as part of the Bushwick Five Points murals. BSA caught up with the artists as they were still at work on their wall. Here are some process shots of the 77% completed project as the two guys employ an acutely understated palette, crisply illustrated lines and natural curvilinear forms.
