As winter loosens it’s grip, the first signs of spring are popping up all over New York, with new buds of passion from tender branches, construction walls, softened soil and industrial doorways. What this season will bring to the streets is anyone’s guess, but there are shoots and seedlings that we haven’t seen before, and a new crop is obviously taking shape. Our weekly interview with the streets also wanders into a few Art Fairs this week as many Street Artists were in town showing studio work and getting up on walls. It was great to meet so many people who are on fire about this grassroots, interactive, DIY, in-your-eyeballs world of street art and to talk about where it is going. While there were a slew of Street Artists banging a luan wall at Fountain, we also got to see some peeps at Scope and Volta.

Images Of The Week 01.02.11 : From Miami With Love, Part I

Now that the thumping headache from too many orange sodas on New Year’s Eve is gone, it’s time to regale little Baby 2011 with some eyeball pleasing baubles from sunny Miami. In early December many Street Artists converged upon this city to add to the sparkling traffic of Art Basel and to crush some major wallage.

Of course, not everybody finished their piece in time because there were parties to attend, booties to shake, and pretty things to watch workin’ it on the street. Dust settled and work completed, last week we climbed walls, squeezed through fences, and raced up railroad tracks to catch all the finished pieces for you. In the process we met some barking bulldogs and charming new friends, because Miami is mad friendly yo, and we even got some inside tips on hidden treasure.

Our weekly interview with the street narrows this week to show you photos of a visit to Brooklyn from French Street Artist “The Dude Company” and a cool shot of Lister at the end.

A glorious autumn day and room to experiment a bit on a rooftop in Brooklyn. BSA invited The Dude Co. to put up an installation on a rooftop in Brooklyn and he happily and giddily obliged. The space was open to his interpretation and he decided to try out a repetition across the middle expanse as tribute to one of the best American actresses this country has given to the world, Gena Rowlands, who turned 80 this summer.

The repetition of her head in the installation is a nod to her depiction of a person unglued and in turmoil as her life swirls nervously beyond her control; Rolands’ emotional, Academy Award-Nominated performance in the movie “A Woman Under The Influence” in 1974, directed by her husband John Cassavetes?

Providing a bookend effect are his skater boy (created from a photo by Brooklyn artist Carlito Brigante) from earlier this year and an old favorite, his stencil of singer Erikah Badu.

And to end this week’s selection we offer a bonus image of a Lister we found while window shopping in Manhattan. Think there were some masks by the artist inside too.
